Re: 4.10 OR 3.73

Thanks for the feedback. I bought a set of 4.10s today and I will be picking them up Monday.

Not that it is exactly relevant since you already got them but I have 37"s with 4.10 and have no problems on power. I pull a good size trailer a couple times per month and don't have any problems with power.

Yours is a good example showing that low gearing is often overrated. Because 37-inch diameter tires are so large, it makes 4.10 gears seem like 3.38 gears if van had stock tires. That ratio is not available, but makes 3.31 seem acceptable for those of us who don't tow often, or hardly ever. It would probably save a little fuel but maybe not enough to pay for the ring and pinion change.

It's actually a good example of apples to oranges. You can't really compare a 5.4L gas engine / 4 speed with a 6.0 diesel / 5 speed combo. Not only are the torque curves of the engines different, but the Torqshift tranny also has a lower 1st gear than the 4R75.

Re: 4.10 OR 3.73

Another question is types of hauling. I know from past work that hauling a trailer say down a flat grade hwy is very different than driving up and down hills in a downtown location ... Ie stop and go.

The same would go for tires. If you cruise hwy all the time your needs might be different then say someone that crawls up rutted rocky hills.

The comparison holds true for any given van, trailer, weight, engine, and or transmission. Whether gas or diesel or any other factor, it takes lower gears to offset larger tire diameter. That's all I was referring to.

I get that your diesel pulls well, but it would pull about the same with 3.31 gears and smaller diameter tires. Yet we rarely hear of anyone using that tall a gear even with diesel when running stock tires.

Re: 4.10 OR 3.73

What brand of gears are most going with for reliability and performance when switching from 3.73 to 4.10?
Thanks

Re: 4.10 OR 3.73

we use spicer or Yukon gears from randys ring and pinion. We have had good luck with them in rock crawlers. I have only used spicer in vans. Here is a link to randys we have used them for years. There may be a vendor on the forum who has them at a good price. I don't want to take business from someone who supports the forum. Just trying to help

What axle and suspension system are you going to be running?

"3 Inches of lift over the factory 2wd height" is going to cause you problems not just with 285 fitment unless you are doing something unique.

Re: 4.10 OR 3.73

Amazon has great prices on Spicer R&P's but you need to search on the Amazon site with the spicer p/n in hand. I just picked up some 4.1's for my XJ for $200 ea. Next best price was $300. And these are the good Spicers.

I run 3.73's and 33's and I love it. Nice and relaxed on the highway, no issues towing, and I've got low range in 4WD if I need it. But I have a V10 so YTMV (your torque may vary).
