Is your speedo right? How did you correct it?
Sweet rig!

Re: 4.10 OR 3.73

Good discussion fellas....

Maybe I'll ask this here...

I have a 5.4 v8 quigley with stock 245/75/r16 3.55 gears +bajasportsmobile's ride improvement package.....2" taller than the stock quigley

I'm curious if stepping up to 285/75/r16 with 3.55 gears is a mistake.....

I'm not interested in changing gears at this point, nor do I tow frequently, but 245's look small, especially upfront .....

Thanks fellas

Hey Sporty.

It has been almost a year now. How did your 4:10's work w the 285's and the 5.4L gasser?

I am doing a 4x4 conversion from bajasportsmobile. I have a 5.4L that had 3:73 LS rear end. I am changing to 4:10 gears. I am trying to decide between 285/75/16, 285/75/17 or 265/75/17. The difference in diameter is 1" between the 16" and 17" rim on the 285's. I like the look of the 285's and all will fit fine. I don't want to sacrifice performance though and like the way the stock 3:73's and stock tires work now.

Do you feel you made the right choice?

Edit: OOOPS... I calculated based on wrong tire size...Should have said 285/70R17 NOT 285/75R17 my mistake...

Re: 4.10 OR 3.73

Anyone care to offer an opinion (or even gasp a fact) about fuel economy changes between 3.73s and 4.10s? What's your experience?

My Quigley V-10 with 265/75R16s has loads and loads of power with 4.10 gears, but only gets ±10.5 mpg. I can afford the terrible mileage, but I can't afford the ±225 mile range (fuel tank is cut down to 22 gallons to accommodate the 4X4 conversion).

I have been looking at options to carry more fuel (AeroTanks tank for ±$1800, or Aluminess bumperage and cans for $3000). But maybe getting more miles out of the fuel I carry is a more-effective solution.

The local gear gurus will install 3.73s front and rear for about the same money as an Aerotanks tank. If the gear change would give me 25% more range, that seems like a pretty good solution.

Have a 2003 V10 Quadvan 4x4, 3.73 No poptop, very little lift. With the 245 stock Michelins we were pretty consistent San Fran to LA around 14.2 mpg, odo corrected. Switched to Yokohama 265's and that dropped to 13.2, again odo corrected. Added mega warrior roof rack and wacked about .3 off of the 13.2. We have the Transfer flow 46 gal nominal / 42 gal usable. I find the 3.73 /265 combo a very nice all round balance.

re: Aero Tanks -I do not believe you will get them to do a gasoline tank. Maybe, just maybe Jake could modify your existing tank, given that it has already been modified once? I don't think he will build you a brand new gasoline tank due to CARB regs if you are a Calif registered vehicle. At least that was what I was told when I inquired. Diesel tank is not a problem, at least yet.
Other tank Options: 1. SMB or Quadvan might install a TF 46 gal tank for $2500++ last time I checked. If they do ask them to do the vent pipe modification so you can actually get 46 gals of gas into the tank. 2. Check with Ramsey at Agile - His tank mods for his 4wd conversion do not reduce the tank by 11+ gals. Of course depends on your transfer case , etc. 3. More I think of it, having a stock tank modified, if it is even doable, to increase your capacity might be a solution for California.

re: Gear change - sorry, you are not going to see a 25% improvement in mpgs with any gear change.

Re: 4.10 OR 3.73

Thanks, 1der, for all the info.

Off Topic question: Where is your TF tank located? The obvious location, for me, is the spare tire well, but then I gotta move the spare tire to the bumper, which means TF tank ($2500) plus Aluminess goodness (±$3000).

Closer to On Topic: Another problem I see with higher gears is that the next owner of my van probably is not going to want them. The next owner will probably want bigger tires, and therefore lower gearing. (Van is not now, and never will be, for sale but one has to consider these types of existential issues while spending).

Anyone else out there done a re-gear? What did it do to your mileage?

The TF tank replaced the stock tank mid ship driver's side. Is your van RB or EB?

Wait a minute. I am feeling the beginning of the click of a light bulb going off. I could get the practical benefit of higher gearing by simply running taller tires...

It's an EB.

Does TF install CARB certified tanks, or does one need to remove the license plates on the way into the shop? This part of this conversation might better be had offline.
