Have you seen this page? Its a complete how-to page on converting the OBS Ford vans, including which trucks to pick parts from. Have you considered doing the 4x4 conversion using pickup parts instead of parting out a running bus?

if it is 3/4 ton is the fast track to making the SMB 4x4.
All in all, I think the thing to do is submit to not having a SMB and re-do the CMB to suit my needs. I don't plan on any long distance trips in the CMB, so fuel economy is not a big issue.

I'd chip in with find another donor vehicle, now that you know the value of the chassis and what you're into. The SMB being really nice is a big part of that equation. Also if you're doing full donor salvage, wouldn't a F-series complete drivetrain be as good a starting point as a more rare 4x4 van?

I would say that a 2005 on up F250/350 front axle would be the easiest install to do. Almost all OEM parts can be used and the fab work is minimal - see QuadVan. If I didn't believe so strongly in the ride quality and long travel/low ride height of the Dana 50 TTB system that I am using then that is what I would be installing.
