After the fact conversion to 4x4

I have been screwing around with the idea of buying as SMB for years. Actually had a guy in San Diego show me his not once but twice (nice guy, obviously). I finally may be getting of my a@@ and doing something. I would rather go used to save money, though it is not that easy to find a used SMB equipped the way I want. I might get close though except for the 4wd. I see another thread where someone is going to add it after the fact, so I gather that is a doable thing. I won't be climbing any rocks, but will travel some dirt roads where it will be important to have 4wd. Suggestions as to conversions? What can I expect to spend? Is there such a thing as a van too old to convert (at least as a practical matter)? Thanks.

Quadvan in Portland, Oregon regularly converts used vans. A buddy just had a 2002 converted, and I'm pretty sure you can go older. Cost is around $14,000.

My Sportsmobile was a year and 15,000 miles old when the 4wd conversion was done. No problems. In fact I was told they prefer it that way because the weight is set and they know exactly what they are dealing with.

Re: After the fact conversion to 4x4

It depends on your Van not age. I just spent about 10k on my 4x4 conversion not including the transmission/transfer case (mine was a Quigley already) using a Ujoint kit and rebuilding both axles, converting to Hydroboost, new driveshafts, and 5 new 37x13.5-20's.

I plan on keeping my Van for a long time. It will not increase its value by 10k. Now as you are talking about a Sportsmobile not a Home Built like mine...

Re: After the fact conversion to 4x4

I'll post pick in the morning. I just found my camera. I had taken lots of pics while working on it then misplaced the camera. I need to do a little write-up and take a few more "pretty much done" pics.
