American Eagle Rims Max Pressure

I have had the Eagle 058 after market rims on my SMB for 8 years now. I suspect over the years they have been one of the more popular wheel styles upgrades. I popped my wheels off today to take them down to my tire store for a rim polishing and new tires and I noticed that stamped in one of the recesses is a MAX 60 PSI warning. Of course the BFG 285/75 R16 are rated to 80PSI and I typically would run about 70 PSI in all 4 for the highway. No rim problems related to pressure that I know off but I find it interesting that it would be that low. I probably won't do anything different but will see what my tire guy thinks and pass it along.

Re: American Eagle Rims Max Pressure

Never considered a max pressure based on a rim. Maybe a function of how well it will hold a bead?

PatO, do you know max admissible weight per wheel? Max pressure is often related to max admissible weight...

Yes I do, for a single wheel (not dually) it is 3420 which is also stamped in a recess.

Re: American Eagle Rims Max Pressure

There's probably more than one mechanism of failure running at high psi. As mentioned, you could break the bead-edge. It could crack anywhere else, or it may simply bleed off slowly due to porosity.

I've broken two Alcoas (both rears). I never ran at more than 65 psi and they are rated at 80. But I turns out I was overloading them. One broke out completely around the studs (I was running them on the inside, so it couldn't fall off. Luckily). The other one started cracking near the valve stem. That one we sealed up with Loctite and moved it to my spare. So far its holding air.

Have you weighed the van? 60 psi may be enough for your load. You can look at a tire load chart to find out where you should be running it at, once you know your actual weights.
