Broken lower stabilizer link pin

On our 2008 EB 350 SMB ( Charlie and Dina Sikes' ex-SMB) it was pointed out by someone checking it out that I had a dangling stabilizer link as the lower pin attached to the ear on the axle tube had broken. I can see why it could fail (pin in single shear with heat affected zone on end where welded) I have obtained a replacement pin, actually a modified grade 8 bolt, from SMB in order to repair. But I am curious how predominent this failure mode is. Have others encountered the same failure?

Re: Broken lower stabilizer link pin

My UPPER pin broke where it is welded to the Stabilizer Bar. I drove it WITHOUT the Stabilizer for a 4000 mile trip this summer and can't really say I noticed it was gone. Maybe it will be more noticeable when I convert to Deaver Springs.

Re: Broken lower stabilizer link pin

Broke one of mine several years ago before I learned the joy of disconnecting my sway bars. I think it was the lower pin, but not 100% positive about that without going out and looking. Welded back on and has been good ever since.

Re: Broken lower stabilizer link pin

Pix? I've been thinking of making some and seeing a failure might help me design it. Thanks.

Re: Broken lower stabilizer link pin

Busted mine about 8 times. After installing Deaver springs I think it only broke once. Look to see if it's hitting anything (shinny metal) anywhere. Before the Deaver's, I couldn't tell if they were disconnected but after the new springs it makes a big difference both on and off road. I always pull them if rock crawling. The last time I installed them was after SMB did some repairs to the shock mount. They changed the links to the newer style and are harder to install. I need to talk to SMB about this. I also wonder if a ratchet strap might help the install.
