cracked front control arm

Well it was bound to happen sooner or later. While the van was in the shop for service the mechanic noticed that one of my upper control arms was cracked. I check the control arms every time I’m under the van doing oil changes and such, so it appears to have happened in the last 2000 miles. I had heard that older Quigley conversions had issues with cracking in the control arms. Have any of you other Quigley folks had this problem? If so did you go with the new and improved Quigley arms or did you go a different route? Oh, we have a ’02 Ford RB-50 PSD van with ~82,000 miles (lots of off road travel as well).

Thanks,
John

Hey John, If you go to the Quigley website with this link it talks about the torque arms cracking.
http://www.quigley4x4.com/pdfs/QSB-06-1.pdf
Unfortunately you and I both are out of the discounted replacement cost offer.
I am having mine replaced. When and if you order from Quiqley make sure you have your VIN number handy. They will ask for it.

On another note, heading to NM in a week to climb. Any suggestions on remote hot springs or back country adventures?

Cheers,
reid

I had my 2002 Quigley back in Fresno this spring for some work and they notice a hairline crack in the passenger lower control arm. Luckily they let me out of there and I took it easy back to CO.

I did contact Quigley when I got home and had the replacement round control arms sent and installed. A little bit of a handling difference by the time I was done (steering damper and track arm bushings replaced as well) but the peace of mind is priceless.

Thanks for the reply. I remember a few years when some of our friends with SMBs had cracked their control arms while in Baja and got the new tubular control arms from Quigley. Ill give Quigley a call and get some on order. The van is deadlined till then as the cracks go all the way up on both sides of the drivers side upper control arm.

I was thinking that some new control arms with heim joints or johnny joints would be nice, but Ill wait till I re-do the front suspension before I do that.

Reid, we like to go up in the Jemez area to the San Antonio hot springs. It is especially nice in the winter where we get to ski in about 5 miles to get to the springs. A very useful book with all of the New Mexico hot springs in it is Touring New Mexico Hot Springs by Matt Bischoff. Feel free to PM me if you would like more info.

Thanks,
John
