I went back and relooked, my van's tow rating is 7700 instead of 7k.

Right, they made that one year 2500 AWD.

Please post your conversion we'd love to follow along.

The AWD 2500 was basically what you are asking about... A 2500 with a light-duty transfer case. They stopped making it because it didn't work.

BTW - Solid axle is certainly not required for 4x4. I wouldn't even recommend it on the Chevy vans. The IFS setup sourced from the pickups is strong enough and rides better.

Second what Carringb said. The IfS rides really nicely on road vs solid axle.

So I can just use the pickup stuff, but will need custom brackets?

Much of it, yes but definitely not all. Quigley conversions use mostly HD truck parts from GM with some custom bracketry to mount the diff, transfer case, and torsion bars to the frame. As Marret says, brakes and upper control arms are factory van stuff.
