F'n Warn Hubs

Damn things keep failing. The stub axles are too short for Warn hubs on my SMB. One fix would be to mill down the outter (mating) edge of the Ford rotor/hub assembly, thereby effectively making the stub axle longer (in relation to the Ford hub). These Warn hubs keep pulling the snap ring off the stub axles (even when I barely tighten the Warn hub screws). Had to use my winch yesterday just to get out of my yard (ok, its a ditch and my 5 3/4" drop hitch was acting like a tiller, but still....). Rear tires would spin, front srive shaft would spin, but no power to the front wheels. For those that have dropped the nearly $500 for the Dynaloc hubs, did you have the same issue (short stub/snap ring problem) with the Warn hubs as I? If so, did the Dynaloc hubs cure the problem? Got a part number?? Thanks.

Nothing? Well, good thing one can still go to the source. Dynatrac says its the Warn hubs. Of course, they have a dog in this fight. However, when explaining the problem, cause, etc., they claim the Dynaloc hubs will cure the problem. Presently offering an upgrade for those with Dynatrac front axles which means $60 off ($430 for the set). That's a lot of $, but sick of having Warn failures. Think I'll bite.

This frick'n SMB is bleeding me dry!

$430 for two hubs? I hope that's an installed price. Still no bargain if it is. Swapped the hubs in my Bronco a few years back. Couple of hours, but I realilze you've got a bum shoulder.

Will SMB warranty the hubs if they're not functioning correctly? Might be worth asking.

Laugh not 'ol "jaged" one. Warn warranteed the last set. The Warn hubs just don't work on my SMB and it doesn't seem to be Warn's fault. Looked at the POs paperwork for my SMB and seems the hub failures have been on-going since the get-go. I need either a longer stub (about 1/8" should do it), or a shorter Ford hub. Since neither of those are a viable option, then I'm left with trying the Dynalocs.

I shoulda just bought a Camry.

John has once again lit a candle instead of cursing my darkness. Seems SMB modifies or used to modify the Warn hubs to prevent this issue. I'm going to try and contact Heber today to see what mod he does/did on them. Guessing he mills down the center sleeve, but we'll see (when I was looking at my other hubs last night that seemed like that would work).

What's also interesting is the SMB info I have indicates the rotor/hubs are stock, but Dynatrac tells me they are their hubs and the Dynalocs are specifically designed to work on their hubs. Humm.

Much learned today.

Hubs are Dynatrac's and the rotors are '95-'98 Ford F-350 4x4 rotors. I'll update the parts list.

The small group of Dynatrac hubs that are too long were supposed to have come with some later builds, but I got 'em nonetheless. Warn mod is to remove .195" from the center sleeve. In effect, to grind off the chamfered portion. No loss of strength. However, discovered tonight the longer hubs present an additional problem, at least for me. Its just long enough so that both my hubs won't engage. I've been free wheel'n all this time. So that's that. Not going to butcher the Warns in hopes of fixing the problem with the long Dynatrac hub. Buying the new Dynaloc hubs and calling it a day. Dan at Dynatrac promises me these will fix my woes and even promised to give me my $ back if they don't. Can't argue with that.

Thanks to John K, Heber at SMB and Dan at Dynatrac for walking me through this little ordeal.

Just catching up on this string after being on the road...I had same issue a few years ago with one of the Warn prem's breaking, going up over Imogene Pass out of Telluride. Went all the way up, and back down in 2WD essentially. Sure was nice to have that 2Low.

Come to find out, it was a known issue at SMB and Warn and Dynatrac had been going back and forth over who's fault it was, or something to that effect. Heber was all over it, thankfully, but of course by then I had already shelled out for some new ones in Durango which I now have as back-up, because I believe what Heber sent were the modified ones. I have had no problems since but must admit I have come close to ordering the Dynaloc's myself. Those things are absolutely bomb proof and beautiful to boot. Let me know what you think when you get 'em on.
