Gas tank mod

Can any one tell me what SMB does with the fuel tank to clear the transfer case? Can I just buy one already done and bolt it in? Do the SMB's ever have a gas tank in the rear where the tire is like a pickup or bronco would? Thanks for any info!

Re: Gas tank mod

Standard option is to crop the tank. Essentially front 10"ish is chopped, and a new plate welded on. No, I don't think they sell them cropped.

Sportsmobile and QuadVan are the only two manufacturers who can install the TransferFlow 46 gallon midship tank. Those guys, and some mobility conversion shops, can install the TransferFlow 22 gallon rear tank.

QuadVan sometimes adds a 35 or 55 gallon (extended van only) rear tank from a cutaway chassis.

I plan on doing the 55 gallon rear tank on my van eventually.

Anyone know why Transferflow limits their sales?

Re: Gas tank mod

Apparently it was done as a means of limiting their product liability and ensure compliance with AQMD regulations. I called and TransferFlow (TF) said it only sells tanks to approved installers. I called SMB West and they only will sell you a TF tank if they also install it. The tank and installation runs just north of $2K.

As much as I'd like the larger tank, three jerry can looks a lot more economically feasible at this point...

I just picked this up at Costco today for $90. It's almost 15 gallons. I think it's a bit more expensive than jerry cans, but it might be a bit more versatile, especially with the nozzle feature. Costco is the cheapest by almost $30 on this. I like it because it will sit flat in my SMB trailer, so I might actually pick up another one to have for deep baja trips.

I am in the same boat with my Chevy, it has a 31g tank and transfer flow won't touch it. I can have a ~50g tank added where the spare went for $1100, which seems excessive both in size and price. So, I'm going to give this poor man's version a try. Just filled it up along with my tank and 2 jerry cans in TJ, 50gallons for $110.

Re: Gas tank mod

These people sold me one for a Wagoneer many years ago. Maybe one of the F-line ones would fit?

Re: Gas tank mod

Thanks for that link Nomadcat! I emailed Aerotank and they immediately got back to me and said none of the tanks for pickups would fit a van. But, they will build a custom tank for a 4x4 van and the price would be $857 installed out the door. They also install skid plates for their tanks (extra $). Icing on the cake is Aerotank is in Corona which just a few miles up the freeway for me.

They sound like a great outfit to do business with.

Re: Gas tank mod

Make sure the vent tube is adequate to be able to quickly, and fully, fill the tank.

Re: Gas tank mod

The tank they built for my wagoneer was rugged as hell. It cost me a ton to ship it to NYC, so you're lucky you're close.

glad it helped.
