Re: HD Spring Shackles

Yes, they would since the torsion isolator is basically large, full rubber bushing. There is not hard point contact unless bottomed out, which probably won't happen without a trailer or maybe large dirt bike on the hitch.

HD Spring Shackles

WARNING : graphic images.

It broke during my annual trek to the Maze district of Canyonlands. I was able to jam a 4 x 4 in between the spring in the body and it would last for a while, but always worked itself out. Made it to the ranger station where we had another vehicle, and were able to get parts in Green River to fix it. The second picture is where the spring hit the underside of the van's body. Not pretty.

I ordered some of the Sulastic shackles, so now I have a spare--every 4x4 should have a spare.

Re: HD Spring Shackles

Is there a specific part number for our vans or does it make a difference between what SMB uses or Deaver springs?

HD Spring Shackles

The stock van part from NAPA worked, so I'm expecting the Sulastic van part will too.

Re: HD Spring Shackles

When you get it, make sure it is the SA-06. They sent me the SA-05 the first time, and it was too soft (they did not charge to exchange). I did have some very minor interference, so I had to grind down the inside "nubs" a little so it wouldn't rub the shackle mounts. It'll make sense when you see it. Very possible my mounts had a little sag in them, so it might not interfere on other vans. With the Deavers double-wrapped eyes, you might have a little interference with the body of the Sulastic at full droop, but it should clear once you get the weight back them. I don't think that will hurt them, even if you were at full droop on a trail.

Re: HD Spring Shackles

Thanks. Seems like a good Idea to keep an extra on board.

Have you ever used one of these setups?

Re: HD Spring Shackles

Yes. I broke the main leaf spring out in the middle of no where in Baja several years ago. A friend happened along with one and I welded the second leaf together with the main and finished the prerun.

It would be a great tool to have.

Re: HD Spring Shackles

Anyone put the Sulastic springs on the front end too? Don't see anything mentioned on their website for front leaf spring suspensions.
