Re: Help! Atlas Transfer Case

If you don't mind sharing your location, maybe we can locate a proper 4x4 shop in VA.

Re: Help! Atlas Transfer Case

I know of Iron Pig Offroad in Fredericksburg. They're primarily a vintage LandCruiser shop, but they may be able to help. Their website seems to be mostly product sales, but I swear they at least used to be a full hard-core wheeler shop.

Re: Help! Atlas Transfer Case

I would advise against driving your van until you add fluid to your transfer case!
It is not hard or difficult to add fluid to your TC. Running it low on oil in the TC depending on
where your repair shop is, could add to more $ and more problems. The zip tie will dictate your fill
level, look at the different oils that atlas recommends for their TC and buy accordingly.
Purchase a hand pump that will adapt to quart size oil bottles, should be easily available.
Unscrew top aluminum nut at top of see through tube, not sure of wrench size! Add fluid using
hand pump until you reach zip tie marker. Depending on how much fluid you are losing and the distance of your repair shop, I would add accordingly.

Re: Help! Atlas Transfer Case

Sorry about your dilemma, but your pictures don't show any significant oil on the transfer case or the undercarriage. Besides the "oil leak" what is the problem?

Check your vent tube and make sure it is clear, if they can't vent the will lose oil over time.

" The Atlas unit is shipped dry. We recommend 2 quarts for the Atlas 2 speed and 2-1/2 quarts for the Atlas 4 Speed . The recommended oil is Amsoil’s Synthetic Manual Transmission and Transaxle Gear Lube 75W-90 API GL-4 (MTG). In the past we’ve used Torco’s MTF GL-4 also. If unable to find any of these 2 then you can use Castrol Syntec 5W50, Valvoline Synthetic 20W50, or Mobil 1 15W50. After installing the Atlas at the proper clocking/ rotation in your vehicle then fill with the recommended oil and amount through the upper fitting of the site tube. Re-secure the upper fitting of the site tube to the Atlas. Mark the oil level in the site tube with a small zip tie so you may see the correct oil level at the proper clocking/ rotation of installation in your vehicle."

Re: Help! Atlas Transfer Case

"MadMax" according to your photo the shaft retaining bolt has failed to keep the cluster shaft in place and it has "walked" out the front of the case .The shaft is stationary ,there are two retaining bolts (one each side) to keep it located in the case. The shaft is a slip fit with an O-ring at both ends.If the shaft is still in its bore in the case on the backside (opposite side as pictured) shaft may be able to be "pushed" back into place, (being mindful not to damage shaft or aluminum case) new O-rings installed and 2 new retaining bolts. If the shaft in no longer in its bore in the case on the backside means that the rear thrust washer will have "likely" fallen out and transfer case should be opened up . There still could be internal damage to the gearbox You didn't mention any grinding..In your search for a shop find someone who is proficient with MANUAL transmissions. ....sorry to here about your Grandma

Re: Help! Atlas Transfer Case

Looks like the problem has been ID'd. I will 2nd the recommendation to Iron Pig, they'll be more likely to work on it before anyone else.

Not to derail or bash Atlas but this is why we use the NV271 (besides being 4x cheaper) Easily replaced or repaired anywhere.

Re: Help! Atlas Transfer Case

Thank you. Grinding was happening all the way home. But the transmission and the regular rear wheel was working fine. But the sound was stressing me out! I will see if i can push/shift the shaft in. Then i will call Iron Pig, and hopefully, i will fill up the tc with oil, and head that way. Thanks again. Especially the pics.
