Re: Irritating rattle from 4x4 shift levers

Interesting as I have a QuadVan conversion with the Ford TCase with the same noise....

Re: Irritating rattle from 4x4 shift levers

This was my high tech fix. It is not pretty but it works as a dampner and much better than that irritating noise on long trips.

Ours does the same, and the way we fixed it was to get one of those colorful pool noodles (for less than a buck), cut it to where it was just 1/4" longer than the exposed shift lever arm, then wrapped it around the exposed part of the arm - hard to describe. That took care of it. I'll take a picture tonight.

Re: Irritating rattle from 4x4 shift levers

G'day Grumpy,
Reading all these posts about Atlas Transfer case issues is making me feel a whole lot better about my Advanced 4WD
Conversion. I am still worried till I get there in just 2.5 weeks time, to know what they have done, with what and how.
Grumpy, yours is a beautiful machine, just a few teething problems.
I've had two Jensen Healy's and two Lotus Esprits, and with low volume, handmade vehicles, you get issues.
I had an Australian made 5 ton 4x4 truck called an OKA, that had 4.5 litre Perkins engine, with a half ton bullbar, you had to work the gears, great chassis, 9 seats, width was over standard track.
Amazing vehicle, poor build quality, engine too small, 6-7 litre diesel would have been better.
Good Luck, you will fix it, Cheers.

Doug: Don't stress too much, your van looks great! I crawled all over the thing at SMB West a couple of weeks ago.......it's one of their display vans at the moment.

Re: Irritating rattle from 4x4 shift levers

Mine has done this since new. Primarily on the highway when I'm doing 50 mph or above. Drives me crazy. My van only has about 7K miles on it. I've had it back up to Fresno for a fix but it started again on the drive home to San Diego. I'll have it up there again in the Fall for another look.

Mine seems to be only the rear drive lever. If I pul it back toward the rear slightly when driving the noise stops.

Re: Irritating rattle from 4x4 shift levers

Ours has done the same thing since we got it.

I fixed it pretty much in the first couple of weeks.

This is what I used to fix it. http://www.cabelas.com/product/Sims-Lim ... id=crrdtfd

Essentially its a rifle barrel de-resonator. Designed to take the harmonics out of a rifle barrel when shot.

It works brilliantly and not very expensive. Take the knob off the shaft of the offending shifter, lubricate slightly, and then slide the de-resonator onto the shaft. It should be wicked tight and almost hard to get pushed down the shaft far enough.

Problem solved.

Ok, took me a little longer than promised to upload the photo

Here is our silly solution, as mentioned earlier in this thread:
