Re: Maximum allowable lean angle prior to rolling over

Most of the times I've got into trouble have been when a portion of the trail unexpectedly gives away. And there have been times my spotter is telling me to continue but I have other plans than rolling my van and re-approach the trail due the chicken effect. One thing that has always bothered me and this applies to ascending and descending steep trails as well and that is a photograph hardly ever makes it look as tough as it feels.

The only time I had the van on two wheels was when the trail gave way, but fortunately, it didn't roll over. Mrs A/T said I drove off the trail, but I've always insisted it was the trail, not me. Nice to hear I'm not the only one who has seen this happen. Then again, perhaps I did get just a little too far off center, but we will never know.................

Re: Maximum allowable lean angle prior to rolling over

Maybe a setup like this would help with the concerns mentioned in this thread!

Re: Maximum allowable lean angle prior to rolling over

How about some fold-out out-riggers?

Re: Maximum allowable lean angle prior to rolling over

Those outriggers would never fit down my driveway or any trail for that matter.

Love the school bus. That must be a real trip to see live.

I’ve searched around but I don’t understand what 1:1 means. Sorry if it’s an ignorant question. Where idaho lies in education when compared to the rest of the states should explain why...

That stock van is at an insane angle I could never get to that point and feel comfortable.

Elsewhere in this thread dave mentions smb suggests that a smb is safe till about 28 degrees before it tips over. I have a hard time judging that by the eye so I picked up an inclinometer as the route into the area weve been playing in lately has a pretty bad wash out. Most every time I’ve gone through it a wheel come off the ground and it got me wondering what kind of incline angles we’ve gone over. I can only think of one that makes me pucker and I plan on taking an angleometer to that spot to see roughly what angle it is cause I want to go back to that spot.

My other question would be roughly what size of lift smb considers their vans. Anyone know? Quigley considers theirs 3”. I’ve added to that with springs and taller tires. That and I assume my top weighs more that a smb top. I’m basically just trying to find a rough area of concern for angle when out in the sticks. Even though the gut usually stops me well before the vehicles limits would. Have never been an extreme off roader.
