Need Links To Pics: SMB Rock Crawling

One one of the Tiger motorhome sites someone claimed that a Tiger can do anything that any other off road vehicle can do. I like Tigers a lot, but this is not accurate. I have plenty of pics of other vehicles on the Rubicon Trail but I need to show some pics of SMBs doing their most radical offroading. I have found a few, but can't find that one of a SMB climbing almost vertically up an 80 degree concrete wall. If anyone can give me a direct link to that picture, as well as any others you feel shows what a madified SMB can really do, it will be very appreciated.

I don't think I agree with your definition of Overlanding in that thread.
Here is you quote from the link.
Overlanding is extensive travel by a vehicle over terrain that either has no road or nothing more than the semblence of where other vehicles have traveled before, i.e. a completely unimproved route. Sometimes this involves rock crawling. Sometimes it means crossing rivers that are 3 or more feet deep using a snorkel to provide air to the engine. Overland Journal is a publication about Overlanding:

I understand you were trying to make a point about the Tiger but to say that Overlanding is done totally without roads is stretching it a bit from my point of view. Using your definition I doubt any of my travels and 99% of anyone else on this forum would qualify as "Overlanding" which I do not think is accurate.

You made reference to Overland Journal. Even their definition doesn't take it to the extreme you described.

Quote:
Overland(ing) Vehicle-supported, self-reliant adventure travel, typically exploring remote locations and interacting with other cultures.
Using that definition I qualify for quite a few Overlanding adventures.
Maybe I have had it wrong all along.
I'd be interested in hearing how others define Overlanding.

Re: Need Links To Pics: SMB Rock Crawling

I don't view "Overlanding" as rock crawling. Maybe occasionally but really, if you have a heavily laden overlanding rig one must think about risk vs. reward. No need to climb an 80* slab with your home, nor does it make sense. Yes I use 4lo a lot and push the limits of my SMB but I have only ever traveled on existing roads.

This statement from your post is incorrect: "As you can see, some Sportsmobiles have independent suspensions with highly articulating axles"
SMB's do not have independent suspensions.

I also wouldn't classify some of those rigs pictured as Overlanding vehicles.

Re: Need Links To Pics: SMB Rock Crawling

It is my understanding that "...travel by a vehicle over terrain that either has no road or nothing more than the semblence of where other vehicles have traveled" is not permitted on most public lands. There are ORV parks but those wouldn't be called "overland travel". My definition of "overland travel" is that the purpose of the travel is to get somewhere and not test the vehicle and driver's abilities in the process.

For your request, quigley site have/had demo video of their van in Moab and where climbing some rocks.

Regarding my overland travel definition here in the US it is using back-country road / trails where conditions might not be smooth and graded.

Now your quote from the link is true in some foreign coutries where nature cleans out the trails.
For example the Sahara in Africa, driving thru the sand dunes and after 5 minutes wind you have no trace again...

But as already mentioned when you travel long distances with your home on wheels, do you really want to push it to the limit of being stuck, broken down or prefer to enjoy the trip by sometimes going around the hard part...
