New Tires

I put on 255/80/17 E rated BFG KM2's. Replaced my Nitto Terra Grapplers which were 285/70/17.

I like the tall narrow profile. 33.3 inches and no problem clearing front fender.

They ride great. Excellent traction. I took them for a drive over Old Dale Road in Joshua Tree this afternoon to check them out. A little lower RPM at Hwy speeds too. Never hurts.

Here's 2 pics. More in my gallery.

Re: New Tires

How is the noise at highway speeds?
I have the older BFG Mud Terrains on my Jeep and find them noisy. I heard the KM2s are much quieter. Your thoughts?

They are louder than my Nitto's for sure. And apparently they get louder as they break in/wear out. It's not a concern to me. On the highway I'm using my car a lot more because it averages 24+ mpg and it hauls ass. That's why I went the next step to an off road tire instead of all terrain.

New Tires

For me, the bigger concern for the KM2's is tread life. I've got them on my Jeep. They are fantastic on the trail, but I have been shocked at how fast the tread has been disappearing.

Will be interested to see what kind of milage you get out of them.

Me too. I replaced the Hankooks that came on it at 33k, sold them used for $100. Now I have 70k, so I got 37k out of the Nitto Terra Grapplers. Not bad, but they were too worn for off road. Your Grandmother could get another year out of them.

Tires are cheap. At $80+ a fill up, it's only ten tanks of gas for new tires.

Re: New Tires

Need a whole van picture. Those are tall/skinny like military... you should get some H2 rims.

I'll get some whole van pics tomorrow.

I paid $100 for these wheels and center caps on Craigslist. I'm not buying more wheels!

Tall/skinny felt good today over rocks. The steering wheel was less affected. The van felt narrower, easier to place. I kept thinking of Unimogs.

I would argue that it wasn't the tall/skinny part that made the van feel good on the rocks - it's that those tires are FANTASTIC on rocks.

Re: New Tires

255/80/17 are taller than 285/70/17? And that is why you have lowered engine speed on hwy. ET.

Speedometer is 1.1% slower with the 255s. 32.7" to 33.1" Tire style variations make up more difference than that.
