Thanks Carl for your recommendation. I checked out this puller on the Wyeth Scott web site. It looks really well made, and sounds like it might be more safe to use than others. At that price, I would hope so!

Given all the guidance in this thread about having a come-along, I will probably buy this. I think I'll wait and see if there is a good class at Overland Expo to help me learn to use it safely first, and what are the considerations for combining the puller with a chain or a tree protector, etc. I don't want to kill myself on the first usage.

I second the comealong. I put my van in a ditch with both drivers side wheels off the ground. The front winch alone would have pulled the front out, but the rear would have slid further into the ditch causing the van to land on it's side. I hooked the comealong to the rear to prevent any further tipping forces and the winch pulled me right out. They are inexpensive and light weight.
