According to this article the 3.2 puts out 200hp/347ft-lb vs 235hp/440ft-lb for the E seriies 6.0 PSD. There's no replacement for displacement...

"There's no replacement for displacement..."

Sure there is, here's one modest example from Subaru and it's not even a diesel; "The STI available in Japan is fitted with the 2.0-liter EJ207 engine with twin scroll turbocharger generating 227 kW (308 PS). Export markets receive the higher-displacement 2.5-liter EJ257 unit with the single-scroll VF48 turbocharger rated at 221 kW (300 PS) and 407 N·m (300 lb·ft) of torque, 280 hp)"

This is from a 2.5 liter, 4 cylinder sedan with a really good reliability record and perfectly ordinairy drivability. With modern engine management and forced induction, you don't need huge cylinder volume to get astonishing levels of output.

Re: Quigley to do 4x4 on new Transit for 2014

The article failed to give any info on the HP rating. Even if you can pump up the engine with a tuner, I'd like to know what it will come with stock and whether or not it will come with different power options. I sure don't like to beta test a engine but if these things have been used in Europe and they do put out 100+hp compared to the 6.0, that would be nice. It's a sure bet that fuel prices won't come down much and any gain in mileage would be great. But I won't give up on power.
I wonder about the cutaway. I heard they expect a diesel there as well using the same drivetrain/frame.

Re: Quigley to do 4x4 on new Transit for 2014

Wow, I didn't think you guys would be interested in the Transit. That's the problem with Ford. They announced the coming of the van and that it would be built in the US, with only a few details released. Obviously all of us have many questions that are unanswerable at the moment. But Quigley must have some inside information from Ford, since they're a conversion-approved company, if they're already planning the 4x4 conversion.

As for the Transit in the article pictures, it is the previous generation and the ones in Europe. I'm sure it will be restyled for our liking; Americanized if you will. I actually like it since the headlights is quite similar to the first generation Ford Fusion sold here. lol Rumors have it that our Transit would have front-end styling that would somewhat resemble the F-150, hence Ford's saying that it would be Ford Built Tough. Then again, they may have meant that not only is it 300 pounds lighter than the Econoline, but probably tougher?

The engines confirmed are the standard in light-duty version 3.7L V6 and the optional 3.7L EcoBoost twin-turbo V6. Ford already said that the V8 would not fit so it does appear that the diesel engine - no details released - would be the Americanized version of the 3.2L DuraTorq I5 diesel. Whatever diesel engine is would have to fit in the engine bay, be fuel efficient, and meet stringent Federal and some State regulations. I would hate to think that the reason Ford hasn't released any details of the diesel engine is cause they're still testing it out for approval only for it to be eventually rejected (Remember the 4.4L diesel V8 being designed for the F-150 but dropped due to bad market?).

I think it's quite mean that Ford is teasing us with this but no details until at least the North American Auto Show in January... merely a month and a half away. They haven't learned their mistake of teasing their new 2013 Fusion for so long.

Oh I hope not, I just watched the Top Gear where they take a transit van on the Nurburgring ring over again
( & ) and I'd totally have an SMB based on that as is: lovely, lovely box.

Unfortunately modern design seems to mean copying each other, just look at the "new" new Beetle... it's like they're copying Neons; which can only mean one thing: "Hey, Nissan has a new van, lets copy that!"

Re: Quigley to do 4x4 on new Transit for 2014

Ford has some pics up of the 2014 body style. Very Sprinter-like from the side.

Front could take some getting used to. I think it will look better in other colors. And still better than the Nissan.

Re: Quigley to do 4x4 on new Transit for 2014

If that thing was black I'd say they took the styling directly from Darth Vaders face mask.

I did see a full size Transit van on the road a couple months ago. It was headed to the Portland Airport and had Canadian plates on it.

I can probably get used to the look but I still have to wonder how a unibody vehicle can end up with the same amount of towing toughness as a body on frame one ton. Has anyone seen any specs on towing limits?

Ya think? Not saying it can't be done but I wonder if anybody that's good with photoshop can make that thing look cool by adding wheels and modified bumpers. Even the euro 4x4's don't cut it IMO. But who knows, maybe Aluminess can do some aluminum surgery.
