Quigley Van spare tire carrier for 33's question

This is my first post

Ok so i looked on the forum and i saw people talking of them but didn't give me the manufactures. I need a spare tire carrier for a 33" tire, I put on a reciever hitch and now the tire won't fit under the vehicle (not happy). I have seen some nice ones on here and i would like to mount it on the left and still be able to open the right side door. Any suggestions or manufactures would help, maybe even a link. Thanks

Welcome.

Aluminess does all the Sportsmobile spare tire carriers and bumpers. I have met them and they are friendly folk.

Idon't really want to buy a whole new bumper but if i have to i will. Is the any company that just makes the tire mount? Or is there a company that makes a receiver hitch with enough clearance for a bigger tire?

They make one that fits with a stock bumper.

I have one.

Call Aluminess, they might be able to fab up something to fit.

Re: Quigley Van spare tire carrier for 33's question

I have an aftermarket bumper. The Aluminess tire carrier mounts between the bumper brackets and frame. It includes a spacer for the other side so the bumper is still straight. You should try and look at one and see if it will work for you.

On the other hand, I am running 33" tires (275/70-18) and they fit in the factory receiver hitch. I did have to bend the two tabs that are on the front end of the spare, but the 33" spare fit. Later I bought the Aluminess tire carrier and moved the spare out back.

Re: Quigley Van spare tire carrier for 33's question

I recently picked up my SMB (2WD passenger van conversion). SMB West put the spare on the back (245/16) on an Aluminess carrier. It is a very sturdy carrier, much better than the ones attached to the door. I have a stock bumper with back up sensors in it. Only problem is that the tire sets off the back up alarm. SMB suggested I take it to Ford Dealer to see if they could disconnect the sensors under the tire. Havent been to the dealer yet. Two sensors are about 3 inches below the tire, not actually blocked by the tire. I would like to keep the alarm system in operation all across the back bumper. It was handy before I had the SMB conversion. Anyone have suggestions?

Re: Quigley Van spare tire carrier for 33's question

There are tire carriers out there that'll fit in a trailer hitch. The problem is that if on the back they don't swing out of the way. But if you have a front receiver you could mount one tugboat-style there, but watch out that you still get good air to the radiator.

In a similar vein, anyone got ideas to make a swiveling mount for the trailer hitch? I figured I could bend and weld together something to fit in the hitch but I'm stuck for ideas on the swivel part. I actually need to carry four car tires back there in a HF cargo carrier, and I'd still like access to the back right door.

Re: Quigley Van spare tire carrier for 33's question

There is a carrier that fits in the hitch and swings out.
Check this out maybe it will give you an idea

I am going to try and fab something up this spring also, I'll never get away with spending $7-800
on a tire carrier.
If you build something I'd like to see it.
