Road test results 4.10s and Truetracs

I've got a little over 350 miles in on the conversion from 3.54s to 4.10s and Truetracs.

I really like the way the van drives with the 4.10s. My van has always felt like it was struggling in the past. With the 4.10s it feels "right". I know that's a very subjective term but I don't know how to explain it. It just drives more civilized. It feels like it shifts crisper and cruises at 60-65 without having the transmission hunting back and forth out of overdrive.

I towed my trailer (aprox 1200lbs) to the Wind River Festival this weekend and it felt perkier on the hills. It will never be a speed demon when it comes to hill climbs but that life with a 5.8l.

Overall I am very happy with the gear change. I still don't have enough time with the Truetracs to have an opinion. The rear Truetrac did get a little exercise in snow and mud Saturday and it performed well shifting power back and forth. So far I like the way it's working but the real test will come when I have the front locked in, put it in 4-low and try to dig some trenches.

I do still have a slight vibration when I let off the gas at 65mph. I'm not real sure what that's all about. It's only noticable if I have the radio off and am focusing on the vibration. The new U-joint and driveline balance did get rid of a lot of the vibration.

I've got to pick up some parts for a friend down and Six States later this week so I'll talk to the 4-Wheel drive shop manager about the vibration. I want to make sure they have diff clearances and torque set up properly. Since they do this kind of work all the time and have an excellent reputation I'm pretty sure it's correct.

I don't have any real good numbers on gas mileage because it's something I don't like to think about. If I had to guess I'd say the gearing change made the gas mileage go from embarrassingly bad to embarrassingly worse by .5 mpg +-.5

That is really just a WAG.

Re: Road test results 4.10s and Truetracs

When I went from 3.73 to 4.56 in my van, by solo highway MPGs went down, but my towing MPGs went up by as much or more (~+1.5 mpg towing. Since I mostly tow, lower gearing ended up paying for itself in not very much time.

When I compare the van speedo to the speedo on a Garmin 376c they are within about .5 mph of each other. That kind of surprised me. I guess going from a 245/75/16 to a 265/75/16 tire and changing gears from 3.54s to 4.10 neutralized the effects of each change. When I ran those changes by a speedo change calculator on the net I got a different result. The calculator on the net indicated the gear change would have more of an impact on speedo results than the tire size increase. The internet thingie said the van speedo should be reading about 4 mph off.

Re: Road test results 4.10s and Truetracs

Yep, I went from a stock tire and stock 3:73 up to BFG’s - 285/75/16 E with a 4:10 and mine is about 3 mph off. GPS = 67mph, Speedo = 70mph (No computer mods yet). Transmission shift points seem to be fine.

Re: Road test results 4.10s and Truetracs

Hey Gnarvan, I was told by a buddy a few years back that in his van a drive line vibration like you are describing was caused by a slightly bent rear axle shaft. I think we should ask U-Joint for an expert opinion on this. (Hey Chris, What do you think?)

That is X off at Y speed, not X off across the dial. Also it assumes you previously had a delta of 0 mph, which is unlikely. Real world tire sizes also don't exactly match the sidewall numbers. The effective diameter is probably different from measurable diameter too as tires squat some now that I think about it.

Overall, it's an inexact science..... officer.

I had driveline vibration from U-joint angles in the driveline. Misdiagnosis got me my first Atlas II...
