squeeking noise when locking hubs

Hey guys

a question from the German forum member.

I love my 08 e350 V8 triton Quadvan 4x4.

All went well. Used it in 2 offroad holidays. Last time about 3 months ago.

Nearly every weekend I drive to its garage to move the van. It is not a daily driver.

Last time (it was quite cold outside - about -2 C -) I thought it might be a good idea to lock the hubs to get the axle moving a little time. I did not engage 4x4. Just locked the hubs.

When I started rolling I realized a quite loud squeeking noise. I guess from the axle at the driver side. It came faster/more frequent when accelerating and vice versa.

When switching the hubs to FREE it disappeared immediately.

Any Ideas about what that could be? Anything I can tell our mechanics here? I myself am not capable. The conversion is quite new. Drove about 6000 miles with it.

Thanks for any advice or opinion!

Philipp

As far as I know standard Ford (F250/F350) Hubs.
Manual hubs.

I'm not sure how the axle is setup, but could very well just be dirty/dry seals where the axle shaft comes out of the tube. Locking them more often helps keep everything lubricated.

Try rotating (or having someone else rotate) the driveshaft by hand with the hubs unlocked and see if you can reproduce the noise.

Garage
Did you get this figured out? If not, you might want to send an email to Quadvan and see what they tell you.

Yes. I am not sure about the english expressions. But again the axle seal has become loose. When locking the hub on the drivers side it is turning with the axle.

The reason still is to be found and eliminated.

Had a problem with a broken axle seal at the same place short before.
