At least with 17" BFGs the white lettering is on the 35x12.5 size and 315/70/17 is black sidewall.

17 generally a bit more expensive in the purchase of Wheels and Tires, but it allows for bigger brake rotors, (unless you are tricky).
If cornering at high speeds is your thing you might be on the wrong forum.

After too much tire research I settled on 18" Method Grid wheels and Toyo 295/70R18 A/T2 tires. I couldn't find a 35" tire with a load rating I liked in the 17" offerings so I went 18". The wheel change is because my next project will be bigger brakes.

The 295 has a width of 11.8" and a diameter of 34.3". They are 0.5" less tall than the 315/75/16 Goodyear Duratracs I had previously. With a -12mm offset wheel and slightly less wide tire there is no longer any rub on the sway bar. I confess the tires look noticeably less tall to me but the Duratracs were massive. More like a steam roller than a pie cutter. Not sure I quite like the look just yet but tires are a compromise and I weighed my needs (90% hwy miles) versus my wants (ie., a tire closer to a true 35"). But I sure like the 4080 load rating versus 3195lb in 17".

I usually prefer that my wheel has a higher load rating than my tire. A 4080lb tire won't gain any capacity over a 3640lb rated wheel, a tire/wheel combo is only as strong as its weakest link. Either way, that combo is stout and shouldn't give even the heaviest rig here (carringb excluded) any problems!

When I did the math I didn't want to have to run max psi all the time. Most of the 17" E-rated tires I was interested in had a load rating of 3195lb at 65psi. My rear axle weight loaded for bear is 5500lb. Using this simple equation that I've seen others use:

5500/2=2750lb per tire. 2750/3195 x 65psi = 56psi

With a 20% safety factor I'm at 67psi or max. I'd rather run an 80psi 4080lb tire at 60 psi. Maybe over-thinking it but sometimes I also pull a trailer on river trips.

How do they ride? My biggest gripe going from 285's to 315's on 16 inch rims was I lost so much in corning response going up in size. The 315's are better on rough roads and I don't have to air down as much but I sure miss how the van used to handle. The main reason I haven't switched to a taller wheel is I'd have to replace 8 wheels & tires...the ones on my van and trailer. Kinda costly in my situation.

I haven't driven it much except around town but the handling is noticeably more precise. The Duratracs were a bit mushy so I won't miss that. Just going by the numbers the sidewall was 9.3" on the Duratracs. A 285 is roughly 8.4". The 295 Toyos on an 18" wheel is 8.1" of sidewall. I like the look of a bit more sidewall and eventually I think a 35x12.5 Toyo RT is in my future but with a trip to Canada this summer and a trip cross-country to Virginia this fall I just couldn't justify the more aggressive tire and extra 10lb at each corner.

I think they look good! I'll probably end up with a similar if not exactly the same setup on my van one day.

Here's a 295/70R18 comparison to 315/75R16. It will be interesting to see if I gain any mileage by downsizing a tad.
