I haven't even test fitted them yet. Looking them over they seem solid, though. Les Schwab will let you return them if they aren't used, if that helps.

Well, I wish you would have pointed those out before I bought the chains.

35" tires don't make enough of an impression on the neighbors, anyway, looks like I have to move up to tank treads.

The mattracks sure are tempting, but instead I just ordered a set of RUD chains from Bill Burke's web site that velogeo recommended.

I'm planning on doing some playing in the snow later this month, and I'll let you know how they work out!

At what point do you need chains on top of 4x4 and lockers?
Found it! Just wish I'd taken a picture. Just below the snow line we started hitting patches of snow in the shady spots -- it's the northwest, there's lots of shady spots. We got to a hairpin turn covered in at least 2 1/2 feet of snow. Half of it was slush, half was frozen pretty much solid. Even with the lockers we couldn't motor through, mostly because the turn was to tight to get any momentum. Admittedly, I didn't actually try airing down the tires or putting on the tire chains because it was almost dark and we'd already found our camping spot for the night. I've got to head back before the snow melts for good and "conquer" it. The turn wraps around a pretty impressive ravine that had a major chunk of body work off of some ambitious souls truck. It just didn't seem like the thing to do on a family outing. But it's got to be done.

We didn't end up needing the chains this winter -- the Sportsmobile did just great in the snow. Well, except for that fuel pump. I don't really ever expect to need the chains, but it's good to know I have that one last-resort tool at my disposal when things get slippy. I'm also thinking about mud.

What's the opinion on cable-chains vs. chain chains?
