Trac Loc LSD opinions

Looking into re-gearing and installing a Limited Slip Differential after my tire upgrade. The only choice that I have with my odd-ball 32 spline axels is Ford's Trac Loc.
Does anyone have any good and bad opinions on said Trac Loc LSD?

Re: Trac Loc LSD opinions

Sorry Leaddoggy, I don't know much about the Trac Loc. If it's the factory limited slip differential, it won't be up for serious offroading. With prolonged wheel spin, the clutches heat up and become worthless. New Ford 4x4s have optional electronic locking rear differentials (very cool), but I don't know what they call them or if you could put one in a Dana 60. My guess is not, they'd likely only fit the Sterling axles used in the pickups.

I always thought that Dana 60s were either 30 or 35 splines. Here's a web site where you can buy an ARB locker for your 32 spline if you want......http://www.4wheelerssupply.com/catal...470_496_22_416.

Re: Trac Loc LSD opinions

I dont know anything about the Trac Loc either. We have a limited slip in our rear axle.. and it's pretty useless. I'd go straight locker before i'd spend money on a limited slip. Only reason we have one is cause it's what came with the rig.

Re: Trac Loc LSD opinions

Hello,

New to the Forum and have been Lurking around for a while. I do not have a SMB but do have a 2001 E250 Quigly Cargo for hauling around my Motorcycles and for work. I do camp in it. but back on the subject... I have been using Gleason/Torson Torque Sensing diffs for years. As they have no clutches to wear out they last a looong time. They are also the only diff that will send torque to the wheel with traction (if one wheel is on ice it will actually slow the one on ice as it sends the torque to the wheel with traction) They are sold as Detroit Truetrac for small vehicles (yes our Vans are small) and are all Gear driven. To give you and idea of how well they work Aircraft pushback tractors have them (not Lockers) as they shift traction with less tendency to spin both wheels sending the vehicle sideways. If these are good enough to push around a 833,000lb 747 its good enough for me. A Locker is great if all your time is Off Road but not good in the front but Truetrac's can be used in front and rear and work better (IMHO) in day to day and regular trail/fireroad stuff.

Here's your answer, perhaps: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1409&hilit=daily+grinding

Doesn't really address your question until page 2, but I gets there.

Thanks for the information Bones,
I was looking at the True Trac before finding out about the axel spline problem. My only choices are ARB and the Trac Loc. Unless I replace the axels.......

deminimis,
I read that thread and figured you would have chimed in long ago.
So how is the rebuild holding up?
How many miles do you expect to get out of it?

Thanks
LeadDoggy out
