Yet another Brake Question

Hello All:

I own a 2006 EB Sportmobile 4x4 with the Dynatrac front axle, currently running 35” BFG’s on 17” American Racing Wheels, recent complete bulletproofed motor with all the goodies so I can tow a 4000 lbs Aluminum Skiff. Impressed with the way it runs, not impressed with the way it stops or lack of stopping. Had an alignment done and the brakes checked by a local but very good shop, pads front and rear 85% , rotors look great. I’ve had a couple close calls where I thought my foot was going thru the firewall trying to not rear end a vehicle in front of me. What have you guys done? I’ve searched the forum and I’m now more confused than before.

Thanks

Mike

Does the pedal go to the floor while you're at a stop light?

I replaced the vacuum pump which made a noticeable difference in peddle force. The vacuum pumps on 6.0's seem to get weak over time. It's not a huge improvement like I'm triggering the ABS on dry pavement but it's a cheap, quick improvement. I've thought if I was going to take it to the next level I would do the hydroboost conversion.

No it doesn’t seems like after they get warm stopping distance increases . Both instances was stop and go LA freeway traffic

I got a nice improvement from better pads. I went with Ford Fleet HD pads on my SMB and have since put them on one other van with great results. Do you know what pads you're running now?

FYI, I have no idea if you have the original Ford brakes with your Dynatrac axle. Mine was a Quigley.

I did a Hydroboost conversion from an E450, greater force at the calipers for the same pedal pressure and it also takes the mechanical vacuum pump out of the braking equation. It was a huge change

It's a relatively easy swap I did it in 6 or 7 hours..... most of it went on routing the hoses so that they don't rub and wear out. The hoses can be bought from local auto store just tell them you have a E450.

I didn't do a hydroboost conversion on my E350, but my Chevrolet has it and the stopping power is noticeably better. These are different vans, yes, but the weights are very similar and the pads a rotors were in good shape on my E350. Take it for what its worth.

Do you have trailer brakes? If not, they can be added pretty easily.

Another option is to convert to the 2008+ bigger brakes. Biggest improvement will be from the larger rotor. But besides the bigger calipers and rotors you will also need new steering knuckles and hubs from Dynatrac. An expensive upgrade for sure but it's also a good time to change out the outer shafts for 35 spline.

I convinced thats my next "upgrade".
  • About 9 months ago I replaced the Vac pump, and it helped a little.
  • 7 months ago I ended up with new Brakeman Front rotors, Rebuilt calipers, and new pads (Ford paid for this because of a snafu), and at the same time they installed new rear rotors, calipers, and pads. All this provided improvement, but still not what i was looking for.
  • Replacing the Master Cylinder and brake booster made the biggest difference.

Sadly, because of the weight of the van & the fact the front brakes perform most of the task, I believe JoeH is correct - just needs bigger rotors & calipers.
