2008 Sprinter Rear Axle Ratio
The 2008 Sprinter has a 3.92:1 rear axle ratio. The 2006 Sprinter has a 3.72:1 rear axle ratio. Since the 3 liter diesel has 280 ft pounds of torque and the 2.7 liter diesel has 243 ft pounds of torque. It must be the engineer in me, but even with the larger 245/75-16 tires on the 2008 versus the 225/75-16 tires on the 2006, it seems Dodge (Mercedes) has going the wrong way on the rear axle ratio- they went for more performance and worse fuel economy. If you do the numbers the 2008 should have a 3.43:1 axle ratio to have about the same fuel economy as the 2006.
Has anyone with a 2008 Sprinter changed the rear axle ratio downward, .i.e, something less than 3.92:1, say 3.72 or lower? Changing the rear axle ratio is only the start- one must also change the computer chip or chip settings so the engine, transmission and speedometer know the correct axle ratio.
I am not interested in performance- read that acceleration, since most of my planned Sprinter driving will be on the highway.
