I do not feel that way about a 285/70/17 combo unless the vehicle is lifted. 285's typically require some modification of the mud flaps and clearances are extremely tight. In my mind any build up of snow or mud would be a problem. Just my opinion....
Hey All,

Long time lurker first time poster here.. thought I’d take the time to post up something that might help. I’ve been trading emails with Jesus Hernandez at Agile on the use of chains, he says...

“Snow cables will work on the 275/70/17s and you will have plenty of clearance”

My 4x 144 short top build is scheduled to start in Fresno Jan ‘18. Planning on having it lifted by Agile after and running the above tire size. Found it interesting that he specified CABLES. Always been a fan of proper chains, but tech does change, so looks like I’d go this route. I still need to double check if I can use the cables on all 4 wheels and not just the rear as Fitz mentioned. I’ll be living in New England with this van so proper snow/ice shoes is mas importante.

Also... I hope to find time to start posting up properly as my build is a bit unique with a Superarm wheelchair lift and flooring tie downs mounted for my youngest son’s wheelchair. Freedom in the form of a Sportsmobile!

Thanks for all your posting fellas, your info has been very helpful as I spec things out.

Fitz! When you have time I gotta swing by again! The questions are endless!

Wrench,

Regarding the Agile info, what wheels are being referenced? As I recall, Agile uses a Roambuilt wheel with additional backset.

Mikemikemike is coming by on Saturday the 16th, feel free to bring your questions and observations and join us!

My plan is to put a set of studded tires on for winter use. I do this with my 4Runner and always feel it gives me the traction needed. Of course, you then have to store the extra set. I have my winter studded set on their own set of rims as well which makes swap out easy.

The rims I'm getting for our Sprinter are the Roambuilt rims though and are pretty pricey. I'm still going to do it but the price may make some people balk.

Fitz-

Not sure what wheel I’m using yet or which Jesus H was referring too, but don’t think it matters.. (The email conversation assumes the Agile RIP suspension kit with 2” lift installed) Tire size seems the real issue as the rims will have an added spacer if needed (Method) or have it built in (Roambuilt). I could be wrong here.. gotta ask the pros.

I’ll mark the 16th on my calendar!

The Roambuilt wheels are badass Backcountyguy. The 600 without beadlook and 800 with made me spit beer all over my garage floor when I saw the price list.. if I only had the moola... if ya got it, Rock It !!!

The factory 4x4 IS lifted 4" higher than the factory 2WD Sprinter. (VC and Agile lift another 2" with their RIPs.) Is your Sprinter 2WD or 4x4?

Mine is a 4x4 running 265/70/17's. Here's what it looks like loaded up with snow....Just enough room for chains.

If I had Lt265/75r16 tires on my stock rims, got a flat tire, and used the spare tire that has size 245/75/16, would that damage my differential or any other components? If so, will a 265/75r16 fit in the spare tire compartment? Thanks!

I can't answer the first part, but several people upthread have said yes to your last question.

According to tire size comparison tool thats an outer diameter difference of 1.1", with a 682revs per/mile on one tire and 657revs/mile on the other tire.

My guess: its no good on the hardware and probably unsafe to drive. But the real problem is gonna be the computer systems that freak out.

I've included the cost of a matching spare in my plans to upgrade,
- max

----- FYI the manual says:

Wheel and tire dimensions as well as the type of tire can vary between the spare wheel and the wheel to be replaced. When the spare wheel is mounted, driving characteristics may be severely affected. There is a risk of an accident.
In order to reduce risks:
* you should therefore adapt your driving style and drive carefully.
* never mount more than one spare wheel that differs from the wheel to be replaced.
* only use a spare wheel that differs from the wheel to be replaced for a short time.
* do not deactivate ESP®.
* have a spare wheel that differs from the wheel that has been changed replaced at the nearest qualified specialist workshop. You must observe the correct wheel and tire dimensions as well as the wheel type.

When using a spare wheel of a different size, do not exceed the maximum speed of 80 km/h.
