Pliers! Wow.
I am not surprised at all by your finding the tool in there.
Did this reduce all the noises?
What did SMB say when you told them about this?
Any other issues?
SMB says they have never heard of anyone saying the vans make an unacceptable amount of noise.
I found misc. bolts and washers left all over the van both times I picked it up in fresno.
They were on roof, and sitting on ledges etc.
I will start pulling off the purple/grey fabric surrounding the garage door spring to see if I can find anything.
I am not planning on another trip to fresno, as I do believe they did their best work....even though I feel the work was unacceptable.
I thought for sure that I had found the problem, but after I drove it with pliers removed I could still
hear the spring banging in there. SMB Austin apparently doesn't pad the channel all the way back to where the chain is, so I cut some strips of carpeting and slid one underneath the spring and glued two more strips to each side. I test drove it. No banging. I think I have the problem cured. Fingers crossed.
Good luck with yours. BTW, when I told them about the pliers the response was, "Thanks for the photo
I will definitely show technician and have in-service meeting about tool care
If noise persist let us know." They are actually great folks at SMB Austin. I got a nice little set of pliers out of the deal.
I haven't had the chance to investigate the rattles in depth.
Selling one house and buying another leaves me with zero free time.
The carpet seems like a good fix.
I don't want to tear anything apart, as we will most likely sell our van and order a new high roof.
Bummer, as my 2.5 year old loves her "hippy van"
Problem persists.
No resolution.
I try and not think about it.
No desire to deal with SMB or go to fresno again.
I am keeping the van for awhile, too much of a $ loss and I am unsure what I would replace it with, I don't know if I'd buy another MB.
Noisy.
The stupid $1,400 fiamma awning rattles a ton....I guess I should check that out.
I actually really like the sprinter aspect of the van.
When I don't look up or listen.......I like the whole van.
The whole SMB cluster.... Has made me refuse to open the top and plan any camping trips.
I certainly do enjoy telling people about my SMB experience when they ask....and ask they do.
Not that many sprinter pop tops around here.
I had a similar issue with our 2014 Sprinter PH. It ended up being the pad that goes under the poptop springs on the right side of the vehicle had come loose. SMB West took it apart and re-glued the pad...no issues since.
they never once offered to give me a ride in one of the vans at the factory for comparison,.
Thats good......
I doubt they BUY low roof Sprinters and put in PH's to have as stock to sell. If there was any in the factory, it was most likely someone that bought the sprinter and is having it converted.
I wouldn't want them driving any of their customers around in my vehicle.. For any reason whatsoever!!!!
