Finding diesel fuel

Hello,

I am now an owner of a diesel fueled rig. I was thinking that there would be diesel fuel conveniently available everywhere since this whole diesel fueld passenger car thing seems so popular. Hey they are racing, and winning, with diesels in places like Le Mans.

So I pretty quickly find out that there is not a diesel pump on every corner. I also find out that when my wife's diesel finding app actually works I have ended up in some pretty run down places.

So I have a couple questions that I hope you might feel free to chime in on.

What do you use to find diesel fuel?

Does the quality of diesel vary as much as regular gas seems to?

Do you have a story about ending up in one of those "rustic" fueling stops?

I am going to see the world in a different way now and it appears to include finding fuel.

Thanks.

Chumley

Finding diesel fuel

I try to fill up in places the I see big trucks filling up. This tells me that the fuel is not sitting and being turned over.

One challenge I've found with the stations that cater to trucks, is that some of the diesel nozzles are a larger size, and they will not extend into your vehicle's filler tube. It either means a slow, careful fillup, or moving to another pump that has a smaller nozzle.

You can find stations and the best prices updated all the time here.

http://gasbuddy.com/

It is good for gas as well as diesel fuel.

Finding diesel fuel

Haven't used it yet, but allstays looks like it has some useful apps, ghost towns, campgrounds/rv, Here's one for finding interstate diesel. Also, if you're into finding bio-diesel on the go, bio buddy has an app too.

Re: Finding diesel fuel

I try to buy diesel from name brand stations and stick to just a few in town. On the road its at truck stops and as far as the high flow large pump nozzles go, I've found the pumps on the end usually have the smaller size nozzle for regular vehicles. I've never used an app to find diesel so if I'm going out of town, I carry a couple 5 gallon cans just in case. Over time you'll figure out where in town to find diesel, its a small learning curve at the beginning.

Re: Finding diesel fuel

We have found that Safeway Grocery gas stations in the Western US and AK all have at least 1 diesel pump. We hit the jackpot in Ellensburg, Wa when we decided to get groceries first ( a low miles/gallon F250 ford truck was taking a loonnng drink into two tanks at the pump )and found out they were having a promotion: buy $75 of groceries on that day and get $.30 off/ gallon on any fuel. Nice! we happened to have an empty pantry and empty fuel tank

We also use gas buddy on the iPhone which gives prices and directions to stations and can be set to only show stations with diesel pumps. The diesel prices posted are not always ascurrent compared to the gas prices probably because there are more gasoline consumers.

Sometimes you get a surprise in that the GasBuddy reported price is a cash discounted price, and if you pay with plastic, it can be $0.03-$0.06 higher per gallon.
