Simple Sprinter Addition

The space under the Passenger's seat on a Sprinter is typically empty. Electronics sometimes go in this space, in other cases heaters.

In our case, there is nothing here. Access is via the stock plastic door:

Once removed, you are confronted with a 4" x 8" opening to a generous storage space below the seat:

In our case, I find that we are typically looking for a secure place to store Laura's purse when we go on a hike. Up until now, that secure space typically ends up being in my back pack....

It is my hope that in the future this space with a locking cover will suffice for secure storage. So far the reviews are good, we will see if real-world use is the same. I am hopeful!

The locking door is available from The Sprinter Store, here is the link:

BTW, TomH and his wife Nancy dropped by for a visit and a Sprinter discussion today. They have some great ideas and I am really looking forward to following their Terranaut build thread!

Dawghandler,

Kind words indeed, thank you, but I'm not doing anything I don't see examples of here on this Forum every day. Everyone shares, and by it we all learn.

(Edit: Dawghandler's previous post got deleted.)

Does the Apple CarPlay require you to have the iPhone connected, or can it work independently of the phone?

TomH,

The head unit functions independently, all normal receiver functions are enabled when the unit is turned on. There is no navigation in this mode, that occurs when the hard wire connection is made when the iPhone is plugged into the stereo. Then the CarPlay icon appears on the display and all of the phones navigation features, including touch controls, are shown on the display. It's pretty simple and works well for us. Also, the phones music library is accessible when plugged in, we typically set it to Shuffle All and down the road we go!

Hey Tim,

We've been working in that same seat area this week also. In our van there was just a foam cover on top and if you scooted the seat forward you could reach right in from the top. By adding a swivel (I think it's that same one you have installed) it makes it secure:

And this is the efficient little stereo D-class amp that went in before the swivel. It's a unique stereo set up and took a little while to configure the system correctly as it's a bluetooth streaming amp run off of the house bank, which works with the stock head unit when driving, but can stream direct from any BT device when the car is turned off, so no drain on the starter battery.

Edit - I just saw the above posts about Carplay and found the post on your aftermarket stereo. Does it run off the house bank and without a key in the ignition? Thanks again for all your detailed posts.

Beached,

When we had the stereo installed the installer suggested a toggle switch such that the stereo can be run off of either the engine or the house battery. The switch is located on the dash adjacent to the head unit. It is typically set to run off the switched engine battery, but flipping the toggle enables the unit to be powered from the house battery when we are parked for the evening (or when Laura is out exploring a road cut or some other interesting geological feature...)

The toggle switch is shown in the picture, it is located just to the left of the display. It is a simple and effective addition.

The 4 point USB connector, did you or SMB West install.
Is is charged from Batteries or 110v? What brand is it & where can you get it, please?

The 4 Point USB Charging Center was installed by SMB Texas and it is connected to the house battery. In addition, there are two other 2 Point USB connectors in the back of the van connected to the house battery, plus one connected to the engine battery in the dash. It is surprising how often they get used.

Posts 187, 193, 194 & 197 speak to these. I have looked and can find no manufacturers marking anywhere. Scalf77 had the best suggestion in Post 194, suggest you follow his lead for a quality supplier.

Sorry for the late reply, we are out using Flint and time and a signal haven't both been available (which I consider a good thing)!
