My Porta Bote is 128 inches long and about 4 inches wide when folded up and will JUST fit on the drivers side of the van without impinging on either the drivers door or the tail lights. How to mount it is a different question.
Any brilliant ideas out there besides getting a REAL boat?
Got my answer thanks to a SMB poster.
If you still need something, check with Dave and or Travis at Aluminess Products. They could figure something out that would be light, strong and look cool.

Bassman,
My SMB is the one in the background with the Portabote on the roof.
However I have what looks to be a similar side mount aluminum bracket that I use to mount in my garage. It came from Portabote, so you can contact them directly. Here is probably what you are looking for (scroll all the way down): http://www.porta-bote.com/rvmounting.html
hope this helps.

I already talked to Porta Bote. I'm trying to figure out a way to not have the brackets sticking out when I'm not carrying the boat. I was thinking of steel or aluminum brackets that hung down off a roof rack and could be removed easily. The Porta Bote brackets are also very costly.

I have a friend with a Winnebago sort of thing, and he carries his Port A boat on the side by having two small padeyes from West Marine top and bottom, fore and aft, and uses two ratchet straps to secure the boat. When the boat is not on the rig, the little padeyes only stick out about a half inch or so.

Go to http://www.westmarine.com and look under padeyes or eye straps- there are a million. The ones my friend uses are part # 477836. But you can look at tons of others. Be sure to mount with a backing plate behind van side to distribute the load.
The tiedown straps are (I think) part # 8725624.
