Sprinter Cold Weather Starting

Hello and thanks to everyone who hosts and maintains this very useful site!

I am taking delivery of my 2017 sprinter (4x4,150s, Penthouse top, D5) in late December; the van will live in Montana and, for the foreseeable future, will be parked outside. I will also be using the van as a daily driver and for skiing trips around the northern US and Canada with wintertime camping mixed in. We get several days each winter with temperatures in the 0 to minus 15 F realm. So I am curious about cold weather starting. The van is currently equipped with the standard equipment (auxiliary heater with fuel sender) that preheats the interior to reduce the engine load during starting but no other starting aids. We also have a D5 for the interior. I am hoping that any of you cold climate inhabitants might be willing to share your experience in this area. Do they start ok in cold weather? Many thanks!

cold weather sprinter in Bozeman

I just took delivery of a '17 Sprinter (to be converted at SMB next spring) and live in Bozeman too. I may have some useful cold weather starting information by the time you get yours. PM me if about this if you want.

I live in Colorado at 7200 feet and the van lives outside. It has never had a problem starting in the winter . It is a different story for the suburban heater.

"suburban heater"? What's that?

Do you use any fuel additives in the winter to prevent gelling?

For the first few years I did not add anything. Then after some reading I started to use Performance Formula One shot with with each refill, year round.. I have started the van in temps in the teens without any problems.

The onboard heating system is altitude sensitive and air flow sensitive. Mine has never worked consistently well at altitude despite the “altitude adjustment”. Lower elevations have generally not been a problem.
