Tire Rack/ Bike Carrier & Cargo ++......thanks for reading!

Hello fellow sprinter owners, (Mine is a Sprinter Westfalia 2004/5)

I am trying to find a rear door mounted Tire/Bike/Cargo rack for my 2005 Westy.

Ultimately I want the tire and bike rack and if it's possible to also include some cargo the would be even better. I was considering a door mounted tire holder and then may a swing away cargo box with a way to mount bikes on top securely.

Later I want to add a rear view camera and maybe a wifi booster antenna.

I would love to hear from anyone who has solved these challenges or have recommendations or experience doing these kinds of projects?

Has any one had to reseal the wet bath. the seal in the shower surround area of my van seems to have a few cracks and I am not sure if I need to remove the old seal or add seal to the existing? Just got the van and don't want to flood it already!

Thanks and I welcome any ideas, photos that might help. I am in the Bay Area CA

Tom

Aluminess makes a spare carrier. I don't think you will find anything beyond that. The frame structure just isn't capable of having a ton of weight hanging off the back. I think the only way you could safely do it is find somebody who can fab carriers that attach to the hitch receiver instead (and even the, you will still be somewhat limited.

I know little about Sprinters but you might try Sprinter-Source Forum.

Take a look at what they are doing in Europe. Westfalia has some interesting accessories.

Although the link below goes to a German brochure it might give you a sense of what's possible. Also, the folks often speak English if you contact them. I don't know what it would cost to ship to the US.

We are getting a Sprinter Sportsmobile and I have used some of the German design concepts to modify my own build.

Good luck.

We have an older version of the Rola box that we've used on our Landrover and absolutely love it. When we go skiing in Tahoe we take the Rola and put backpacks with our clothes and other accessories in it. The back of the SUV is taken up by our Bernese Mountain Dog

Thanks for all the feedback. I picked up my GearSpace 34 for the bikes and with all the recent rain works great. I am still looking for a spare tire carrier. Just completed a 3500 mile trip with no spare but would prefer change that for the next trip.

Hi PorcupineRim - congrats on your new Westy! Your best resource is probably the Yahoo group here:

http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/sprinter_westfalia/

The photo section (once you've joined the group) will have good ideas for you for rear storage / bike racks / tire carriers.

Regarding the shower, you should remove the old caulk as much as possible. New caulk doesn't like to stick to the old stuff. An x-acto knife is useful, but I've found the best tool to be a metal scraper, like this:

http://www.google.com/products/catalog? ... EPMCMAc4Cg

Go to your local hardware store and find one that's sharp. Use the knife to cut away the bulk of the caulk, and then the scraper to get the remainder cleanly off of the surfaces. I also like a caulk application tool - basically a little shaper to make your bead look nice and clean. Also available at your local hardware store

Good luck!
Mike.

I have seen 3 differant tire carriers, 1 attaches to the door & hinges, 1 attaches to the side of hitch, 1 attaches to rear of hitch
