What do you think of this price

Hello all,

I was wondering if you could provide me input on a used Sprinter that's for sale locally. It is a 2003 Dodge Sprinter, long wheelbase, 270k miles, 5 cylinder diesel, rear wheel drive, and has a $600 roof rack with ladder that I like. The asking price is $8500, and it looks like there is minimal surface rust. See the description the seller sent me below. Any thoughts or suggestions? I am a bit nervous of the rebuild part, also read that these things will go into 500k if they are taken care of but...?

"I am flexible on price. The back does not have shelves and is empty. There is a divider between the two front seats and the open space area.

It runs really strong but I think the radiator needs to be flushed and an oil change. I put a liter of antifreeze in and noticed the water was rusty. I bought the vehicle a few years ago wrecked at an auction and only had to replace one headlight, bumper, fender, and power steering pump. I have only driven it around to make the repairs. I have just now finished it and never used it for my business. I bought it to use in my painting business but my painters all have their own work vehicles and can carry ladders. We are moving this week and I have decided to just get it fixed and sold. hope this helps. Hope to hear from you. Thanks."

Thank you for any input/thoughts/suggestions,

Ian

PS: I know this is pretty open-ended question. It is priced lower than most the ones I have seen around here. Again any input is appreciated.

Seems pricey for the miles and salvage title. But if it fits your requirements then take it down to Dennis Williams at Linden Engineering in Golden for an inspection and evaluation. Transmission rebuild around that mileage is one issue that comes to mind, but Dennis can give you the whole scoop.

Re: What do you think of this price

Hi Pete,

Thanks for the reference. I'll probably give them a call tomorrow to see what they would charge to look the vehicle over.

I have been looking in all the nearby states, it is hard to find one with less miles in my budget.

Re: What do you think of this price

My response to the price was probably a gut reaction to the mileage and salvage title. When we were shopping for our T1N Sportsmobile last spring the available units were generally lower mileage (20-80k) and of course the van price was hidden inside the overall camper price. Since you've been shopping the current market you'll have a better sense of price and mileage for work vans.

But it's probably still worth having Dennis evaluate the van, since serious drivetrain problems can be costly. Dennis cautioned to budget $12k for engine and $7k for transmission if replacement or rebuild became necessary.
