The present plan is to fabricate one......make sure there aren't any...ahem...."design oversights" ....then perhaps make a few more, depending on prototyping costs and interest here.

It would really suck to have a fit problem on say 5 bumpers....

Right now it's designed as a folded sheet metal part in SolidWorks (several parts actually) ....and I'm getting quotes to stamp and fold 5052 .190 thick aluminum....and weld and powdercoat.

So, we'll see....I could certainly cut most of the pieces if I want to weld more and fold less....the thought of folding/bending .190 thick sheet in my garage has me breaking out in hives

It's aluminum......Solidworks says around 50 lbs or so

I still need to finish the hatch design.......hinged, removable, sealed, etc.

Been looking at latches, cam locks....would be nice to have something flush, black, sealed, lockable.

So cool that you can design stuff on the fly like that. Soon you will just print it!

....not sure what you mean by "on the fly".......I've got some time into this.

We print stuff now all the time just isn't strong/durable enough for something like a bumper......although the materials have gotten way better over the decades.

BTW, people think 3D printing is a new thing.....I was involved in an aerospace project (F22 engine) back in 1987 where we attempted to 3D print patterns for cast parts....didn't work out due to shrinkage, etc. It's done quite regularly now for rapid prototyping.

I was really just referring to how accessible tech is these days. It always impresses me seeing what can be doing without owning a mfg company or a design build firm. I attended a design to part conference in Portland and that was a bid eye opener into what I would call "regular" people designing and building things on their own. This forum is a good showcase for talented and passionate people doing cool things.

I had to make holes in my store box for the water to flow, You may consider moving the door to behind the license plate to mitigate water and dust.

Some sort of step will also help.

The wood mock up bumper looks great. Like others, the idea of some storage in the bumper is nice. I've not put anything in our rear (or front) bumper-storage locker, but I've got some ideas.

Also, not knowing how tall the top of bumper on your rig might be I can say that ours is such that while it's a stretch to step up on top of I do favor the side to side flat surface. I do get up there every time out to hunker down the camp tarp. If I had to concern myself with a step to maneuver around I might have fallen off at this point.

I couldn't find a full on rear shot, but i'll say that when setting up camp I do crawl all over that bumper.

Oh, and definitely put the rear lights in the bumper. We've got LED's in ours on a switch and they can sure light up the camp.

: ) Thom
