Removing spare tire mount vs storage box vs hitch

Hi everyone,

I'm getting planning on adding a under floor storage box on my 2010 extended Ford E250 and I have some questions.

The access door will have 14-3/8" x 20" but the box will have 35"x16-1/4"

1- Am I cutting at the right place? (red lines)

2- Will the hitch interfere with the storage box?

3- What is that part? (on the right)

Thanks again guys!

The grinder is in my hands guys...
I'm flying blind here, probably be cutting this thing today.

I will probably be going with a galvanized steel box, I will paint it inside and out using my liquid rubber paint to protect it.

Isn't that thingy with the ? mark the gizmo with a steel cable used to wind up and lower the spare tire?

Since it would be difficult to uncut something there have been numerous threads from members installing their own underfloor storage boxes. Do a search for their descriptions and picts and what/where they cut in order to install their boxes.

Good luck,
Ray

Hi Ray,

No it's not that cable thing to lower the spare, I already unbolted that one.
It seems to have wires connected to it and it's about the same size as a battery.

I aleady did a search before posting this thread but I didn't see any pictures of exactly where to cut, I will look again today in case I missed something.

What underfloor storage box do you have, or are you making your own?

There's someone here who makes and sells them and they could best answer the question if you have one of his, but if you're making your own, then I'm not sure how we can help.

Here are the threads you want. I searched on "underfloor box"

Re: Removing spare tire mount vs storage box vs hitch

I red those threads and they don't show where to cut to remove the spare tire mount.

I just don't want to cut anything I shouldn't That's all.

The box itself is not the question.

Re: Removing spare tire mount vs storage box vs hitch

The first post in the thread noted again below (and also posted above) shows exactly where you need to cut, at least for the box that several folks have bought from another forum member. Your box may be different, but the stuff to cut out should be the same.

Re: Removing spare tire mount vs storage box vs hitch

I'd highly recommend getting the box before cutting your van. I would even more highly recommend getting northleftcoast's box here. Super nice guy, great quality, semi custom.

That said, instead of trying to drill out the huge rivets that hold the spare tire carrier, I just chopped it off all four places it meets the frame.. Essentially made it flush with the frame. And I'd go with a sawzall not grinder, much quicker, safer, and much less messy. Don't get me wrong, I love a good grinder, but for this the sawzall is better.

Ok I will use my sawzall, thanks for the heads up.
So basically you cut where I drew those red lines on my first picture?

Actually I will have the box fabricated out off galvanized steel, maybe 18gage, with irish lock joints that I will seal after with liquid rubber, inside and out. A friend has a HVAC company and they do the ducts themselves (also he owes me money lol)

Sorry they seem like great aluminum boxes but I'm in Canada and on a tight budget, the shipping, handling, the import fees, 15% taxe and to top it all off the bad exchange rate for the Canadian dollar make my decision pretty obvious.
