Shortening parking brake cable

On my 2007 E350 SMB the parking brake pedal goes to the metal and it still slips on a grade. My mechanic says the adjustment at the drum is maxed out. How can I shorten the cable a bit? This rig needs it as my driveway is inclined. Next up is a new cable, perhaps.

How about new parking brake shoes? That usually fixes the "cable too long" problem...although it puzzles me how the shoes get worn in the first place....

Driving with the park brake on.

Also using it as "poor man's traction control" in the winter...I've been guilty of that before.

Yup, it happens pretty easily. Last spring while on a rally, someone came on the radio and said "someone's parking brake is on", he could smell it. Sure enough, it was me. Even with new shoes and properly adjusted they still have so little effect that it's easy to miss the fact they are still on.

My VW bus had a good system. The parking brake was set with a big T-handle above the shifter. If I left it on, I smashed my knuckles on the handle when I went for 3rd gear.

On my Crown Vic it released automatically when I selected Drive, which was convenient but struck me as potentially dangerous.
