Wheel spacer question

Hi,

I'm planning on adding 1.5" rear wheel spacers and this is the info I have on our OEM wheels (2010 extended Ford E250) :

Bolt pattern : 8 X 165.1mm or 8 X 6.5"
Stud size : 9/16"
Center bore : 124.9mm or 4.9"

Can you confirm this info?

I will be buying these:

Re: Wheel spacer question

Yes that is the correct sizing info. You will likely have to cut the rear wheel studs to fit those spacers otherwise the factory studs will protrude past the spacer. I know my rear studs were about 2" long (from the wheel mounting surface.)

Using a grinder?

Did you get steel or aluminum spacers? 1.5" or 2"

Any bearing or axle problems?

Do you have an OEM rear axle?

Re: Wheel spacer question

I used my port-a-band saw to cut the studs, a grinder with a thin cutoff wheel would work just as well. Spin an open ended nut on before you make the cut and it will chase the threads, after you've made your cut, when you back it off. I have 1 1/4" aluminum spacers mounted on my full float axle so the axleshafts don't care if I have spacers or not, I'm not foreseeing any bearing issues in this application either. As far as spacers on the semi float axles, that seems to be debated here a lot. If you search the forum you will find endless discussion/ opinions on the matter.

The debate about axles is based on "IMOs"
If only there would be concrete evidence.

Wheels spacers are on hundreds if not thousands of SMB's and vans with Semi-Floating axles - what do you need that is more concrete than that?

Do they cause additional stress on axles and wear on bearings- no question.

Is it a problem? Not until it is, but usually not.

Why do you want them?

If concrete is the same as empirical evidence than there are plenty of first hand reports that using spacers on a 10,000 lb rig with a semi-float D60 rear axle is not a great idea. It puts the the wheel further out from the bearings so some folks have had roached bearings, whereas others have physically broken the axle.

Like most things it depends to some extent on your application. IMO of course

Re: Wheel spacer question

I have had the steel 1.5" spacers on my van since 2007 and 88,000 miles, no problems. Just put a set on another van that already had 130,000 miles and have had no problems. Used a thin cut off wheel to shorten the lug bolts and torqued them at 130 lbs. drove for about 200 miles and then checked the torque. I also used lock tight on the nuts when I mounted them.

Re: Wheel spacer question

I didn't want to shorten the studs on my axle, so I put the wheels on the milling machine and counterbored recesses to clear the studs.
