Kayak Question

For those of you that carry kayaks on the penthouse .. do you strap your nose and tail down or just strap the body only? If you do strap down the front of the kayak.. where'd you attach the pully wheel?

If you just strap the main body, does the kayak do alright at fwy speed?

I don't have a kayak (yet) but I do carry a 12' long Portabote. I only strap it to my three Yakima bars. No problem at freeway speeds.

I just strap the body like a surf board with the boat upside down. and for straps i use DA Kine Baja straps and thay(ie the boats) have never flown off.

i work in the paddlesports industry and sold kayaks and canoes for about twelve years. i can tell you that every rep who hauls boats has a horror story about boats flying off the roof or trailer! it's always a good idea to throw a bow line on the boat in addition to the two straps you use on your kayak saddles or cradles. that way if you make a mistakes securing the straps or a strap breaks(it does happen!) you will usually have time to pull over before the boat goes airborne. best of luck.

Kind of off topic...but I have an Advanced Elements inflatable kayak. If stuffs into a gear bag type thing that you can stuff inside the SMB. I have the advanced frame convertable model that seats 2 or 1.

May be an alternative for those who do not want to stick a kayak on the roof. Great for lakes and I've paddled around in the ocean as well. This one is not for whitewater stuff...but I think they have some models that are.

It paddles nice and seems about on par with the sit on top rotomolded kayaks as far as paddling efficiency and speed.

We are taking delivery of an inflatable kayak this week. We will be doing a full report on it, including how it fits in the van and how it makes for better travel vs. our hard plastic non inflatable Ocean Kayak.

What kind of kayak are you getting? I researched Innova (nice but a bit more expensive) and Advanced Elements and a few more I don't remember. Looking forward to your write up!


Joanna...check out Advanced Elements and Innova http://www.innovakayak.com/ They both make some nice kayaks. I was checking out the Helios II.

Sevlor makes some less expensive models as well.

I don't have a lot of kayak experience, but if you have any questions about the AE inflatables let me know. It's easy to set up...takes less than 5 minutes to inflate at a nice easy pace and have had zero problems with it.
