Mud flaps or tow/rock guards

So I finally got the tow bar installation completed and towed my Fiat 500 behind my SMB E-150 RB! It was rainy and only a short drive. I was very pleased with the towing and braking. However I was not happy with how much dirt came up to land on the car! So I'm investigating a solution: traditional mud flaps or the more sophisticated tow/rock guard... Any advice?

With a Fiat, wouldn't it just be easier to bungie it vertically to the rear door of the van? ;-)

Re: Mud flaps or tow/rock guards

The low pressure area behind the van basically sucks road grime up onto the car. The only way to keep it clean (and only relatively) is a full width spray guard. You'll probably want a receiver-mount version if you aren't towing most of the time. My brother went with a slotted/rigid ABS plastic guard which works great, but it makes noise any time it scrapes the road (dips, etc). Many motorhomes have the brush style guards. There's also some tow-bar mounted rock guards, but I don't think they keep the grime down like the truck-mounted spray guards.
