Yakima Rack and Roll Trailer

I have a new poptop SMB sprinter @ SMBWest under construction. I am considering the purchase of a Yakima Rack and Roll trailer to carry a canoe and bikes http://www.yakima.com/shop/trailers/tra ... nd-roll-66.

The pop top roof has solar panels and @ 8'-6" is way too high off the ground for my back to want to hassle putting a canoe up there - Its hard enough doing it on a 7' high VW west. Has anyone had road experience with these trailers?

No personal experience, but looking at the link you provided, it seems a bit pricey for what it is, and it seems quite one dimensional in it's capability.

I used to have a very similar trailer, made in France, that I used behind my old Westy for kayaks and bicycles. I gave it to a friend when I bought the Ford as I can use a beefier more general purpose trailer without having to worry about the weight. It worked very well but with a diesel Westfalia I had to be concerned about weight and drag.

Have they just legalized medical marijuana up in Washington State, I mean what are the folks up at Yakima smoking?There are several manufacturers of small, lightweight trailers for kayaks, bicycles etc that have been around a long time. Yakima are very late arrivals and are IMHO grotesquely overpriced. I think if you spend a few minutes on the computer you'll find a pretty good selection at, dare I say it, slightly more reasonable prices.

Remember you can pull a REAL trailer now, don't need that smartcar weight!

$2000 is a LOT of small trailer. There are tons of decent ones on craigslist, harbor freight and others. Harbor Freight has that size (48x48) for like $220 and they wind up used on craigslist if you don't want to build. For $4-500 around here you'd have tons of options and money left to customize.

As you know our roads are not to good and on road a small trailer would not do to well. I am not a fan of real lightweight trailers and find that they bounce around alot. I have seen my little utility trailer with the wheels off the ground when empty and I bet that one weighs less when loaded then my little one does empty.

Something that small will be pretty tough to back up with. Small trailers have a habit of turning very sharp, very quick. Once they start to go they go fast and are hard to bring back to a straight line unless you are quick with the reactions. You won't be able to see it with your mirrors. Your only hope of seeing it is with a rear facing camera.

this is really a nice trailer and its pretty long for what it is. its not $2k nice but nice.

suspension was adjuable and looked real stable
