5.4 liter engine

About the 5.4 liter engine, I intentionally specified it that way when I had the van built. I consider it an advantage over the other engines for several reasons:
It is substantially better on gas than the 6.8 (we're getting around 13 mpg), and I never had a problem with power when we ran with other 6.8 Sportsmobiles in Colorado and other places in the mountains (the gearing is 4.11, which is optimal with 285 tires). Also, it is not as cumbersome as the 7.3 l diesel that was the other option back then.
While the 7.3 l is a solid engine, it is also not a particularly clean one and it is noisy. Much better to pull into a backcountry location quietly, you might still see some wildlife. In addition, the price of diesel in many places of the country eliminates the gain in fuel savings (and a diesel puts out about 18 percent more CO2 than a gas engine for the same amount of fuel).
Keep in mind also that the 5.4 engines easily reach 300.000 miles in commercial applications like the Supershuttle vans.
