After talking with Carringb this is actually a 35 gallon tank. I also measured and its body is 25" front to back.

Yeah but... just like the 55 gallon tank (that you can put more than 62 gallons in), there's a difference between advertised capacity and actual capacity.

Actually I was wrong too. They list the older, small, rear-tank as 37 gallons. In 2010 they changed the spec to 40 gallons, which I think correspond to the change to plastic?

I started thinking about it because I sized my underfloor storage to fit the old 37 gallon tank. I'm not sure the nominal empty measurements actually changed though. Maybe the switch to plastic lets it bulge enough to fit those few extra gallons?

Is this tank only for gas or would it work for diesel too?

Depends only on the sending unit id guess and that can be replaced. Right now it has a gas sending unit.
