Fair price for Sportsmobile with 244K

So far I have gotten lots of info from this site- you're all to be commended! Now I can use some advice. Available locally has been a 2001 E350 pop top, 19', loaded, 1 owner, 4 new Michelins, etc. 2wd and always garaged. I inspected it last June and the elderly flyfisherwoman! was asking $14,500. Great deal, right!! Oh, did I mention 244k miles. Rebuild tranny at 102k. (just after warranty expired.) It has not moved since then and just recently she dropped price to 13,500k. Has a stack of all service records 2" thick and the rig is super clean inside with minor dings, mostly from backing up. How about it, should I trust the miles or what?

What is the van worth to you?

What if it had a new engine/trans?

Could you get an engine an trans for $5000? $7500? More? Less?

If it would be worth $20K with a new engine and trans and you can get the two done for $7500, you can offer $12500 and be happy.

Re: Fair price for Sportsmobile with 244K

Sorry I can't supply pics as I am not the owner and got to inspect it on qa very snowy day last June- yep, snow in June in MT! the inside cabinetry was all in excellant shape, had to take my shoes off to enter! Pop top worked fine as did all window covers, I have not problem with the build-out- it all was just fine. It is a gas- will have to follow up on the other. I am not at all mechanical, more of a carpenter/handy man and under the hood is not where I like to be. Will follow up with additional info if I can go to take another look at it this weekend. thanks for the input so far!

It's worth the asking price if in the condition you say. If it hasn't pulled a trailer all of its life and maintenance has been kept up a Ford gas engine will go many more miles than that if taken care of, but probably not maintenance free. 500k is frequently obtained on the fleet vans at work. Some need a rebuild around 300k but they are dogged constantly. I would almost be more concerned that suspension/brakes/steering were in good shape than the motor/trans. Try to get some pics!

With that kind of mileage you need to take a close look at things like door hindges and other things on the body that tend to wear out. All that stuff can be fixed but factor some additional repair costs into your offering price. If the drivetrain platform and interior layout is what you want and the projected cost of repairs fits your budget it sounds like a very clean winner to me. Having all the service records to check out from a one owner vehicle is a huge bonus. Go over the records and see if there are any recurring problems that may haunt you in the future.

Re: Fair price for Sportsmobile with 244K

I'm going to try and arrange to see the rig today, along with my wife, and I will take some pics. I know the owner has taken care of it, it has always been garaged, and most of the miles are highway miles between central and southern Colorado and here in Mt. as the owners were both avid flyfishermen. Off road use limited to FS roads and BLM access to riverside camping sites. I will double check for cracking of fiberglass, etc. when inspecting. In my first encounter with it, it was literally puking wet snow and crawling around outside not really an option. I, of course, would have my mechanic (he's good) check it out before purchasing. Thanks again to all for this site- not only tons of help but inspiring--- now to win the lottery and afford the big $ rig!!

That sounds like a lot for that many miles!

I have found several over the past week that are only a few years older and between 84,000 and 115,000 for under $7K.

I would keep looking.

Sportsmobiles for less than 7k or just vans? I've never seen an SMB for anywhere near 7k.
