Yes, he sold it, a couple of months ago. He was very busy getting ready for his multi year adventure trip to the tip South America which started end of September.

Sportsmobile roof lift system Wanted

Greetings!

I am gathering parts and pieces to make my idea of a good retirement cruising van and am looking for the SM lift system for the penthouse roof. My van is extended but my guess is the lift system is the same for the popular standard body length van. Any ideas out there?
Thanks for the help.

Guessing based on your user name you have an extended GMC/Chevy van....

The Ford penthouse tops come in two lengths...regular body (RB) and extended body (EB). The fiberglass and lift mechs are different, and the roof contour is different than a GMC/Chevy.

There are a few folks around here that have installed an RB roof on an EB and an EB roof on an RB van.....all fords... That takes fiberglass rework skills among a few other skills.

Are you looking to fabricate a PH top for a GMC/Chevy?

Sportsmobile lift system wanted

Hi

Yes, I have the 2002 Gmc extended that I am working with. I am looking for the lift system from a Sportsmobile donor vehicle. I’d like to buy the roof complete from door openings up.
I have converted a VW Eurovan non pop top to a pop top from a donor and having the roof to see the installation technique was nice to see and helps with the detail of the installation. As the saying goes, the devils in the details.

Hi again, being new to the site, not sm though, I can’t figure out how to put out there I am looking for a roof. I don’t need the top just the lift system and a roof would be nice. SM is very quiet on their systems so I was unaware the lifts were different. I can guess it’s for the width of the spreader bar on the roof, is there something else different that you know of? I wonder if the RB vs EB lifts are different?
Thanks

Not sure where you are, but an option you may not know about is Safari Condo vans in Quebec, Canada. They build their vans on the GMC EB platform and have several pop-up roof options. They will do just a pop-up add to an existing van, and 2-3 years ago when I checked their prices were much cheaper than SMB, especially with the Canadian-USA $$ conversion rate. Worth checking them out if you don’t mind a road trip to Canada. Unless you speak French, emailing them is probably the easiest option.

^^ Yup that’s it. They have two different “v-tops” and a very cool hard side pop top (but unfortunately that version doesn’t sleep anyone upstairs, while the v-tops do). I’ve seen a couple Safari Condos in person and they seem really well made. The V-top is on the order of what Pleasure-Way does.
