Check out member Ridge's write up on an epic trip he did with his 96 TTB.

The set up is quite capable.

Could Dana 60 ring and pinion and spline shafts be used in a TTB? Or is that not possible/necessary?

No, but why would you want to - it is a non-issue.

Can a Dana 60 be made as light as a Dana 50 TTB???
Can a Dana 60 be made to work like a Dana 50 TTB???

They are apples and oranges. Both taste good. One is faster

Got it. I really appreciate the explanations from everyone in this thread. It has been more informative than all the previous info I've read on the different axle approaches combined.

I have a verbal agreement on a low-mile '99 7.3. My buddy, who builds racing engines and has forgotten more about 4x4 than I'll ever know, suggested the UJOR approach. To that end, I picked up a Dana 60 front and Sterling 10.5 rear out of an '04 F250 4x4. Also grabbed its ESOF NV273, which I prefer over the manual 271.

This discussion has me reconsidering an Agile TTB conversion. It looks like it just soaks up everything you can throw at it. Looks a lot more compliant and better-riding over rough stuff.

It all depends on what you want.

Our system is a Long Travel 4X4 Suspension System like you would find in many Prerunners used in Off Road Racing. It has a very compliant ride compared to other systems and drives more like the van did right off the showroom floor on the road. Off road, it has the high speed agility of the best modern factory 4x4s offered. We have owners that report better handling off road than their Rubicons and Toyotas.

Just try the "Speed Bump Test".

It is my belief, that a Independent Front Suspension TTB performs better in sand. I'm not sure where a straight axle van would do better off road. On the road a stiff straight axle might corner better in a flat turn - with our TTB you will feel the suspension moving, which flattens out rough pavement though.

Ujoint's system is a tried and true leaf sprung straight axle conversion that is very robust and reliable. The ones I have driven have very good road manners. Their conversions look awesome and they have that look that many are wanting.

Many people want a straight axle with leaf springs - if that is wanted, Ujoint would be my choice.

Their DIY option is great - no one else offers that.
