I'm thinking about major axle swopping these days after weighing my empty '95 Quigley E150 with two kids and three adults on board. It was right at the GVWR. So when camping with my kids I'm sure I am carrying more than the allowed weight. Add in a bad road like the one out to the Maze and I think I am asking for trouble. Your van might be a good candidate since the body is bad but I will need to research a little more and see if everything would fit. Does your van have ABS? Do you happen to know if the axles and suspension are interchangeable?

As far as I know, no ABS. I've got leaf springs up front and I believe quigley's have coil springs (you'll have to check). I don't think it would make a nice, easy conversion. If you're just looking for a set of axles, I'd imagine you can find them cheaper off a beat up 4x4 truck.

I'd also imagine that even quigley's changed up their suspension design over the years so even finding a quigley with a 60 (if there is such a thing) will require some more work than just making the swap.

I could be wrong with all of this and just talking myself out of a potential sale, but you asked and that's what I think.

If you're here in town and looking for someone to do put a bigger axle under, Advanced 4wd can help you out. With an e150 though, I'd imagine they'll say you're fine with a 44. They normally didn't put 60s under anything except the diesels but somehow mine ended up with one.

Since its from SLC, chances are it was converted to 4x4 by Advance Four Wheel Drive. The other company who did leaf conversions back then was SalemKroger in CA.

I am in Albuquerque. Thanks for the clarification. Yup, my Quigley has coils up front with a Dana 44. So I guess it won't work. As for the appropriate size for the rear, my local Desert Rat 4wd shop recommended that if I was going to go to the trouble of an axle swop and add a locker I should get a full-floater 60 with the heavier suspension components. They thought the front 44 would be ok with heavier springs. There was a 60 on here at a fair price but from a much later model that would not fit. I have been googling axle compatibility to find what vehicles might have a match but not any luck so far.

And AFAIK the difference in the vans (150/250/350) is running gear, inc brakes and wheels and suspension, not chassis size?

I think you're right about the chassis sizes being the same. It think the 250 and 350 may have been candidates for bigger engines but I'm not sure.

Chassis do vary. Each model up gets taller and heavier frame rails. But, the important dimensions are the same (width, hole spacing from flanges, mounts etc).
