Robb I thought the same thing, the sale of the old offsets the cost a bit.....but has been totally worth it for us, no regrets

Just think of it as you are helping someone who is home brewing their own van to get a penthouse for a much lower cost. You have also added to the forum knowledge base. Both of wich are appreciated.

Just curious if anyone can give me a rough idea of how hard it is to install one of these... Is it something that is feasible for a DIY install?

Well....I haven't noticed him that active on the forum, but you may reach out to checksicks (John), he purchased and installed my old SMB top, on his rig, I hope he doesn't mind me giving out this info or mind answering some Q's.....[emoji51] I wouldn't mind seeing what my old top looks like painted and mounted up on its new home, I don't think he posted up a build thread or photos.....

Definitely doable if you're somewhat handy. Boywonder has a great thread with details and pics detailing the swap.. It's called "popping my top".

Nice looking top and I am possibly interested in purchasing it. That said, curious why others would be replacing good SMB tops with a CCV one; is the CCV that much better? I haven't seen either in person and would love people's impressions. Don't want to hijack the thread but it seems to be pretty off track at this point anyway

Couple main points for me.. The CCV top is electric and can be opened and closed by my girlfriend. She can not currently do either with the SMB. Also there is more space both width and height in the CCV upper bunk area. Nice for us, since our small dog likes to spread out and seems to take 50% of the SMB space.

But the SMB tops are more than functional.

Re: For Sale: Sportsmobile EB Penthouse Top (just the top)

I agree with Rob ^^^

SMB tops are great, but CCV are actually a little bit better. Bigger bed, more storage with top down, super strong lift mechanism which can handle anything you'd put on a van roof, roof vent, bigger windows, etc. etc.

I even put a roof air on a CCV top and it lifted it fine and worked awesome.

Thanks for the input guys. I don't suppose that any of this has to do with the fact that lots of us just seem to enjoy spending money on our rigs

Hi,

It's very straightforward with the dimensions available from the donor van.

Check out my photo filled top install here:

The thing to remember is the carpenter's axiom... measure twice, cut once.
