Re: Used SMBs on Sportsmobile.com
FWIW, the previous owner of my SMB advertised their SMB on either Cars.com or AutoTrader.com because they didn't want to pay the listing fee of Sportsmobile. From their perspective, they probably would have been better off to list through Sportsmobile, not necessarily in terms of exposure, but to determine a fair asking price.
When I was up at SMBw getting some work done after buying the SMB, I was talking to Alan Feld, and he asked how much I paid for the SMB. After I told him, his exact words were "You stole it." All I can guess is the the previous owners were more interested in a quick sale, rather than maximizing the return.
I called on the ad the day I saw it, and a prospective purchaser was already looking at the vehicle. Lucky for me, that guy made a lowball offer, and the owners called me up and asked if I wanted to look at it. Had a deal made within a few days. The market does seem a bit slower now, so a real sense of urgency may not apply.
Lessons learned: 1) search all avenues everyday (SMB website, Craigslist, eBay, used cars site,...), 2) have your finances ready to go at a moments notice, and 3) be ready to pull the trigger quickly if you see what you want.
