Wanted: low mileage 4x4 SMB
New to the forum, from Tahoe. We're sold on getting a 4x4 SMB, but still figuring out the best approach on buying one. Scouring this site, Sportsmobile's site, EBay, Craigslist. Haven't ruled out buying new, but prefer a low-mileage used model.
Must-haves:
- PH
- Furnace (love the diesel option on a diesel vehicle, but would accept propane)
- Hot water via flat plate heat exchanger
- Inverter
- 50 plan (or similar)
- Low mileage (e.g. closer to 30K than 80K)
Preferred, but not required:
- RB over EB
- Diesel
- Exterior shower
- Awning
- swivel captains chairs for driver and passenger
Avoiding (or at least don't want to pay more for):
- Internal shower or toilet, propane stove
- A/C
- premium video or sound
- Microwave
No financing required ... paying cash.
Looking over used models, the lack of furnace seems to be a frequent showstopper ... can Sportsmobile retrofit used SMBs that weren't built with propane (or diesel) systems?
Been doing my homework, but still relatively new to SMBs, so comments, pointers, suggestions welcome.
Thanks.

Re: Wanted: low mileage 4x4 SMB
I can answer yes that smb can add a diesel furnace.
I can also say that we are happy with our diesel furnace.

I'm quite sure SMB west can add the propane system after most builds.

Re: Wanted: low mileage 4x4 SMB
We have been looking used as well and must have a furnace. If you can get the original owners name on a van you are considering, SMB can look up the build and let you know what they can add. In my case all vans we have considered (3) could have a furnace added. Good luck.

Thanks for the responses ... useful and appreciated. Now, if I could only get such information as easily from SMB West!

Re: Wanted: low mileage 4x4 SMB
I'm in the same boat as you. I've been looking for awhile and have realized that my ideal Sportsmobile with all my preferred options may not exist. I've talked to both Sportsmobile TX and CA and they can do any modifications you wish. To get an idea on cost, check out the price sheet for a build and then figure some additional cost. They stated that depending on what you want, it may take longer than when they are building. They charge $75/hour for the "above and beyond" cost of a new build. Also, I would highly consider locating a van/rv conversion place near you that may do mods. I found a place through this site in Denver that is well respected and cheaper than Sportsmobile. Just my 2 cents. Good luck!

John at Vanture in Denver is who I talked with. He's been with them since 1993 and came from the rv industry and his partner started in 1986. A few members have either used them or heard positive things about them. Contact:
